My name is David Arends. I am 61 years old. I have been a school teacher, and currently practice medicine as a PA in our local rural clinic. I have been happily married to my wife, Jane, for 36 years. We have 3 grown children and 3 grandchildren.

I am a violinist, choir director, and I enjoy volunteering with our local community theater.

My wife and I have enjoyed traveling throughout the US and abroad, including a 3 year stay in Central America where I volunteered at a village clinic.
  • I am passionate about our liberty and will diligently guard our individual rights that are guaranteed in the Montana Constitution and work to prevent government intrusion into our personal lives.
  • I am deeply concerned about the political division and the incivility in our public discourse. As a legislator I will be uniquely poised to bridge the gap, reach across the aisle and get people talking. But most importantly, I will work to get people listening to one another. In this way we can build a consensus and create excellent legislation that will best represent and benefit our constituents.
  • I have a passion for the rural community, which, unfortunately, has been in decline for decades. Our legislature must be working diligently to enhance growth, rebuild infrastructure, support our public schools, improve behavioral health access, and improve access to affordable housing. Our state government exists at the pleasure and will of the people and must be more responsive to their needs.
I am particularly passionate about the support for our public school system. There has been a concerted effort by our legislature to divert the public funds designated for public school support through initiatives that authorize the formation of charter schools and community choice schools under the guise of “parental choice.” These initiatives will weaken the rural public school, and ultimately will weaken our communities as our schools serve as the centerpoint of community involvement and cohesiveness.

The most important characteristic of an elected official is to be an attentive listener, actively seeking to understand the opinions of their constituents, especially those with opposing points of view. The elected official must always remember that they are in office to fairly represent and serve their constituents always conducting their activities with honesty and transparency
Throughout my careers as both a teacher and PA I have developed the skills of careful listening and valuing problems to find the best solution for a given situation.
A representative’s core responsibility is to fully understand the needs of their district and create/support legislation that works to fill those needs so that our rural communities may thrive. The official also bears the responsibility to be a peacemaker, building bridges where none exist so that community members may work together effectively for the good of the whole.
I would like to be known as someone who had compassion, who loved people unconditionally.
When I was 16 I got my first job at a Jack-in-the-Box fast food restaurant. I had the job for one year. I became the night manager and learned the meaning of hard work and excellent customer service.
All Creatures Great and Small. It is about love, personal sacrifice, and humility, wonderful life lessons.
We have a campaign jingle. It starts with, “Vote for David, vote for David, he’s the kind of guy who listens to your needs…”
I have struggled with following a healthy diet and keeping my weight down.
Their relationship must be founded on mutual respect. Once again, the principle of listening to understand is paramount.
Bridging the divide between parties, increasing access to affordable housing, protecting our natural resources, preserving personal freedom and dignity of all citizens.
Having some experienced legislators present is essential, equally important is having new representation with fresh ideas and unbiased perspective.
Good relationships with other legislators is beneficial, especially with those in the opposite party. Respectful cooperation between legislators is essential for the creation of excellent legislation that will best benefit the whole.
Ask me later! It may not be appropriate for all audiences. LOL
Montana Schools currently can only receive a maximum of a 3% increase in their funding biennialy. I would propose to remove the 3% cap and allow funding to increase according to the actual inflation rate.
Committees that involve Schools and Education, prison reform, and affordable housing
I am in favor of increasing access to ballot initiatives by eliminating any fees associated with the process, and eliminating the newly created regulation of requiring the Attorney General to determine constitutional muster of the proposed initiative. This is not the Attorney General’s responsibility, and it creates an unnecessary barrier for the people to have their voice heard through the ballot initiative process.
