I was born and raised as a first-generation American in Florida House of Representatives District 22. My parents immigrated from Mexico to Buffalo, New York, and later to Gainesville. They taught me the importance of working hard for a good education and faithfully participating in our democracy. I'm a product of Alachua County Public Schools, attended Santa Fe College and earned my associate's degree . That strong educational foundation helped propel me to earn my bachelor's from Flagler College in 2014 and my MBA from St. Leo University in 2015. Not long after graduating college, I came home and felt a calling to run for office. In 2017, I became the youngest city commissioner elected in the history of Gainesville. During my two terms on the commission, I was selected by my fellow commissioners twice as Mayor Pro Tempore to lead as we advocated for gun safety policies; affordable living for working families, and navigated the COVID-19 pandemic. Outside of holding public office, I have been working for small businesses my whole life. I currently work for a homegrown company, 21st Century Communications, which provides rural internet service through the Affordable Connectivity Program. In my free time, I proudly led the founding of the Alachua County Young Democrats and Hispanic Caucus. I volunteered with Alachua County Emerging Leaders, for the Gainesville Sun Reader's Advisory Board, and served as a Board Member of Family Promise nonprofit.
  • Defending reproductive rights by fighting back against extreme anti-choice politicians' attacks on abortion access. We should invest in childcare, and maternal healthcare, and protect the right to birth control. Everyone must be free to choose when to start a family without government interference
  • Making Florida affordable. With our families struggling to afford rising costs, now is the time to build a Florida where we can all thrive. To make our economy fairer and more affordable, we should confront the homeowners insurance crisis, extend access to our public colleges and universities, strengthen protections for working people, and expand Medicaid.
  • Advancing gun safety. Floridians are tired of career politicians claiming that the gun violence epidemic is inevitable. We deserve better than that - we deserve common-sense solutions that will save lives. To protect our community, we should strengthen licensing requirements and mandate safe weapon storage and background checks.
Protecting democratic values and institutions, health and safety issues, and climate change resilience policies. I'm passionate about accomplishing public policy goals that unburdens the most people from the hardships of trying to succeed economically in the next decades.
I have several role models I try to follow in my life. Mostly friends, family, and colleagues I admire. As for figures I have not personally met, I look up to the fortitude of Greta Thunberg, the resolve of Barack Obama, and the leadership of Joe Biden.
Not a specific one, but I enjoy classic and contemporary American political works covering the amazing 20th century and the feats accomplished within. I'm a fan of presidential biographies and the stories of everyday people who lived throughout the consequential times of our nation stemming from the early embers of the American revolution, through the Civil War, past the Civil Rights Movement, into post-modern America.
Personal responsibility, integrity, and fortitude. Democratic values are important and are often fostered best when elected officials exhibit these qualities. We should have elected officials who honor the elections that take them into, and even out of, office. Democratic values do not dictate victory all the time, but they do dictate an attempt to try and reconcile our differences peacefully and truthfully to the best of our collective abilities.
I was born and raised in HD-22 giving me a lifetime of experience and knowledge in my community. I have years of exprience in local government as the youngest elected City Commissioner in Gainesville's history. I was twice elected by my colleagues to serve as Mayor Pro Tempore during time's of crisis.
Serving the greater needs of the largest amount of constituents. Often times the mark of success for a legislator is how many people were helped by policies that they will have never heard of until they experience firsthand the benefits of good public policy and sound public administration of said policies.
I would like to positively serve my constituents and it would please me to be remembered as a State Representative who worked in a bipartisan way to deliver for constituents across the aisle. I would like for people to say it didn't matter who you voted for, but my District Office delivered public service dutifully and effectively.
Student Branch Manager and Bank Teller which I held for 2 years.
The Bible, because it is the book I have read the most throughout my life.
Dr. Dave Bowman, Astronaut from 2001: A Space Odyssey
Yes it has been difficult to rise above the current authoritarian wave passing through our country. It is difficult to operate in an environment so hostile to traditional democratic values and to deliver for constituents in such an environment.
The State Legislature provides for the adequate funding of the Governor's proposed budget, but also acting a check on executive overreach into the legislature or judiciary. The Governor's veto provides ample checks to legislative oversight.
Our ever growing population is challenging our post-pandemic economic recovery, our environmental risks to climate change is having a market effect on business predications and industries that rely on long-term financial growth planning such as the homeowners insurance industry.
Yes, I believe having local government experience like my two terms on the Gainesville City Commission will uniquely prepare State Legislators to do their jobs.
Yes, as a member of a larger legislative body no legislator can do the work on their own without their fellow legislators.
Yes, I look up to legislators such as Sen. Bill Nelson, Lawton Chiles, Bob Graham, and more recently, Reps. Carlos G Smith, Anna V. Eskamani, and Rep. Yvonne Hinson.
I currently do not have plans to run for higher political office. I want to focus on being a good State Representative for District 22.
Yes, hearing the stories of survivors of domestic gun violence steel my resolve against the gun manufacturer lobby that works to oppose secure storage, red flag, and cool down periods which have been shown to reduce domestic gun violence.
Yes, there should always be legislative oversight of the executive even if granting emergency powers is necessary during a time of crisis. This is not the time of Ancient Athens when an elected executive could prorogate public government assemblies under exigent circumstances.
A bill to address the rising cost of homeowners insurance where Floridians rank 50th in the nation.
Florida AFL-CIO, Local IBEW, Levy County Education Association, Equality Florida, Latino Victory, Human Rights Campaign of North Central Florida, Sunrise Movement Gainesville Chapter, Florida High School Democrats, Moms Demand Action: Gun Sense Candidate Distinction.
Ways and Means, Health and Human Services, Agriculture, Higher Education, and Rules.
Elected officials must adhere to public financial transparency of government funds and have a personal responsibility to hold governments funds to account in front of the people for them to view and if they so choose, critique or inquire upon.
I would lower the threshold of signatures required and allow more time to gather signatures to place ballot initiatives on the state ballot.
