Candidate Connection

David Balat participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on February 27, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and David Balat's responses follow below.[2]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Healthcare

2) Infrastructure
3) Economy[3][4]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

As a Healthcare executive and Hospital CEO over the last 20 years, I've seen that our legislators are creating more harm by injecting more and more government into the business of healthcare. We have an issue with costs and affordability that can only be remedied by allowing the free market to work.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[4]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. David Balat answered the following:

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

I would highly recommend Milton Friedman's book, Free to Choose[4]
What legacy would you like to leave?
If I'm fortunate enough to be able to serve in this position, I would hope that what is said about me is that I supported and defended the Constitution of the United States.[4]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
Medical Records Clerk in an acute care hospital[4]
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics?
Obviously not given I've had no political experience. However, I do believe that is important to have a good understanding of civics, history, and economics.[4]
What do you perceive to be the United States’ greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?
Remembering who we are as a Nation.[4]

Campaign website

Balat's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Protecting Our Constitutional Rights We must uphold the Constitution as it is written. It is not a living and breathing document, it is the law of the land. We must protect our Constitutional liberties. As a Constitutional Conservative, I believe in national rights. The proper role of government is to preserve protect and defend those natural rights.

Reconstructing Healthcare Healthcare is an intricate and complicated issue that needs to be addressed by an expert in the field. There are too many people trying to fix a system they do not understand. My plan, FreedomCare, has the support of many in the industry and is a free-market solution that gets government out of the business of healthcare.

Improving Houston’s Economy and Infrastructure For too long Houston has been neglected and the key industries of Oil and Gas, Health Care, and Business have been ignored. We need a comprehensive plan in order to strengthen our economy and infrastructure in Houston and the U.S.

Strengthening Our National Defense Our national defense is weak along the boarder, and our soldiers are not given the proper resources they need. We must continue to strengthen our national defense as a deterrent to other countries and groups that wish to do us harm, and protect Americans here at home.

Returning to a Limited Government I plan on going to DC and deregulating government. Career politicians maintain their power and influence as legislators by increasing the size of government and consequently their role within it. Limited government is the ideal of the conservative base and of those that love liberty and that is what I will fight for to preserve. The last of my concerns will be my longevity in Congress.
