What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
The top three areas I would like to inspire or contribute to are: 1. Data-driven discussions on how to best achieve student success, not just on academic tests, but in broader areas of life. 2. Data-driven discussions on reducing student inequality and achievement gaps. 3. Improving quality of life for students and staff across the county.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Within the area of education, I'm most interested in teaching methods, curriculum, and the handling of diverse student abilities. I've been spending a lot of time looking at the budget, comparing funding/spending within and outside of the county.
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
I believe the most important characteristics for an elected official are honesty, clear and transparent objectives, and the ability (both time and competence) to carry out the duties of office.
What is the primary job of a school board member in your view?
I view board of education members as primarily a panel of judges. The superintendent, staff, and public bring items to the board, which the board then decides on. I see lobbying and advocacy as necessary additional duties of the board.
Who are your constituents?
My constituents are: first, the residents of my district (District B); second, the residents and guests of all of Harford County; third, all members of our society. I view our education system as existing to prepare our local segment of the next-generation of our society, wherever they have come from and wherever they may end up.
What principles drive your policies for safety in schools?
I believe that school safety priorities should be based on cost/risk analysis, and not just perception and fear. Fears cannot be ignored, but also should not be the primary driver of policy or spending.
