Candidate Connection

David Beckham participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on August 22, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and David Beckham's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Improving the public education system in the state of Missouri, including expanded technical training for our young adults.
2) Insuring our farmers and agricultural businesses thrive and continue to provide quality food and other resources to our state and the world.
3) Protect our working families, with livable salaries and quality health care.[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I believe that Missourians are much closer on their needs and wants than is usually represented to them. I believe in cooperation, but also in standing up to the unchecked power of a super-majority. I feel that some politicians have made bad choices from internal "bullying" practices. I will stand up to bullies inside and out of Congress.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. David Beckham answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?

My father, Kenneth Beckham, a retired educator and at 82 years of age still conducting the St. Charles Symphony Orchestra; and my grandfather, Wick Beckham, who passed away in 1980, a genius and a great ethical leader.[3]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else that best describes your political philosophy?
As a child in the 60s, I developed my political awareness and outlook on life through comedians on television, from the Smothers Brothers for their sometimes very serious side-notes to the understanding of racial tensions from Dick Gregory and Flip Wilson.[3]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Putting the needs of the people ahead of personal opinion.[3]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
I listen more than I talk. I am usually the last person to speak in meetings, because I am able to take the best from all viewpoints and put them into a new framework that everyone can agree on.[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Represent the people, stand up for what is right and stand up to what is wrong.[3]
What legacy would you like to leave?
The world was a better place for my being in it.[3]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at that time?
The funeral of John F Kennedy, I was 2.[3]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
I cleaned up a clothing store when I was 13 years old. I was paid $10 a week and worked an hour after school Tues & Thurs and from 9 to noon on Saturdays. I did this for 3 years and after the first year they doubled my salary.[3]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
My Anniversary / Thanksgiving. They usually take place the same week. I love my wife.[3]
What is your favorite book? Why?
The Razors Edge. The transition from being about W. Somerset Maugham to being a story about the character Larry Darrell is flawless in my opinion. The transition of Darrell's character is inspirational.[3]
If you could be any fictional character, who would you be?
I like being me.[3]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
I'm not attached to physical objects, I love being with my family.[3]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
What's So Funny 'Bout Peace Love and Understanding by Nick Lowe / Elvis Costello[3]
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Getting enough sleep[3]
(For non-Nebraska candidates) What do you consider the most important differences between the legislative chambers in your state?
The Senate determines what and when the public gets to vote on matters, this has caused problems recently.[3]
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
I have never shied away from new opportunities of experiences.[3]
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
Infrastructure / Education / Citizen's well being (employment health)[3]
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
Cooperation. Antagonism between parties or divisions of power is a dishonor to the people we have been chosen to represent.[3]
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Absolutely. I will work with anyone who has a good idea, regardless of party or locality.[3]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
By county and residency. Clean and distinct divisions without party politics.[3]
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Education, environmental, agricultural and judicial reform.[3]
If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the legislature, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
Freshman leader.[3]
Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
Richard Gephardt[3]
Are you interested in running for a different political office in the future?
If the people feel I am working in their best interest, I will remain in the State House. If they feel I could do better in U.S. House (after I have served them well) I would want that opportunity.[3]
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
The struggles of two different families trying to adopt their own children after the abandonment of an ex-spouse (incarceration and extradition) has touched and frustrated me. I want to see these situations resolved in a honest, sincere and simple manner.[3]
