I am a husband, a father and a grandfather. My wife, Lisa, and I have four grown children and six grandchildren.

I graduated from Blackfoot High School in 1987. I then served a church mission for two years in Argentina (1988-90) before graduating from BYU in 1992 with a degree in economics. I then attended law school at the University of Utah, graduating in 1995. I have practiced law in Blackfoot ever since. I am the founder of Cannon Law, PA. I specialize in criminal defense. I was elected to the Idaho House of Representatives in 2020. I serve on the Agriculture; Judiciary, Rules and Administration and Revenue and Taxation committees. I am the Chairman of the House Revenue and Taxation committee. I love spending time with my wife, our kids and our grandkids. I love sports and can frequently be found playing basketball, tennis, pickleball, disc golf and/or running.

My wife and I recently purchased a historic church building in Blackfoot which we are remodeling. Ultimately, the remodeled building will house two residences, a law office, a pickleball business and an events center. I have an entrepreneurial spirit—and a thing for historic architecture—and am super-excited for this adventure!
  • I believe in limited government. I have a passion for reining in big government. I believe in people and in families and in small businesses. I am skeptical of trying to solve problems by growing government programs and/or creating new government programs.
  • I believe in the United States Constitution, including the Bill of Rights, in the Idaho Constitution and in individual freedom and liberty. I am a fierce defender of religious liberty, free speech, gun rights and the right to chart one’s own course, pursuing as one sees fit, his own or her own American Dream/Idahoan Dream.
  • I believe in free markets. Free markets have done far more to reduce hunger and poverty and to raise the standard of living than any government program ever will.
I am passionate about free markets; about individual liberty and about smaller, smarter government.
Honesty, integrity and devotion to conservative principles of adherence to the Constitution; limited government; reasonable taxation and personal liberty.
Granddaughter: “Knock-knock”

Me: “Come back with a warrant…”

  • What can I say? I’m a defense attorney!
I support efforts to make government more transparent and accountable. Transparency and accountability are vital to reduce graft and to make our democratic republic viable, long-term.

My name is David Cannon. I am a long-time resident of Bingham County, Idaho. My wife, Lisa, and I have four wonderful children: Justin, Tyler, Rachel and Scott.

I am a Republican. I believe in conservative values and principles including the notion that we should put more faith in people and businesses in a free-market, incentive-driven system than we do in government.

I graduated from Blackfoot High School in 1987. I served a two year church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) mission in Argentina from 1988 to 1990. I graduated with an undergraduate degree in Economics from Brigham Young University in 1992. I graduated with a law degree from the University of Utah College of Law in 1995.

I am an attorney and have practiced law in Bingham County, Idaho, since 1995.

I believe in Common Sense Conservatism.

Economics is the science of scarcity. My observation is that politics is too often the art of pretending that scarcity does not exist.

I am proud to be an American and proud to be an Idahoan! Ours is a heritage of freedom...of opportunity...of prosperity!

We can honor our heritage, and take ourselves and our posterity to new heights, through free market principles, personal autonomy and responsibility and government which provides a framework that allows individuals, families and the private sector to thrive.
  • Prosperity is best achieved by a private sector where individuals and businesses are free to innovate and achieve, not by ever-growing government.
  • State and local government is better at addressing state and local issues than is the federal government.
  • Natural, God-given rights such as those identified in the Bill of Rights must be respected and protected.
I am passionate about capitalism.

I am passionate about freedom.

I am passionate about the Constitution and the limited government thereby created by our country's Founding Fathers.

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Idaho

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.

Click here for an overview of legislative scorecards in all 50 states.  To contribute to the list of Idaho scorecards, email suggestions to editor@ballotpedia.org.
