Campaign themes
2014
On his campaign website, Salaverry highlighted the following issues:[1]
The Middle Class
- Excerpt: "By far the most important economic issue is the future of the Middle Class. America is exceptional because of its huge, broad-based and muscular middle, because of the high quality of life for the many. If we lose the middle economically-- and many say we are well on the way-- we lose the middle politically. The dangers are real and frightening."
Housing
- Excerpt: "Home ownership-- the underpinning of the Middle Class-- is increasingly out of reach in San Francisco. But our affordability crisis is driven by high demand and low supply more than widespread greed. Rent control-- politically addictive-- drives high housing costs."
Jobs, Jobs, Jobs
- Excerpt: "Jobs are the solution! But jobs created in San Francisco are either very high pay tech jobs or service jobs driving, cleaning, cooking and caring for the newly wealthy. We need solid, living wage, private sector jobs and paychecks to raise a family with dignity. There are innovative ways to attract them, but we must avoid corporate tax giveaways that pit our city against others in a race to the bottom."
Business Climate & Regulation
- Excerpt: "While complex, modern economies must be regulated, excessive, misguided regulation kills the goose that lays the golden egg. Regulations should protect our health and environment, insure safety and honesty, but not crush entrepreneurial energy or scapegoat business. Let's strike the right balance."
Unions
- Excerpt: "Unions brought us the weekend, the 40 hour week and job safety. But some unions became corrupt-- even mobbed up-- or obsolete. Public sector unions are powerful and especially prone to abuse when their money and troops elect politicians who make unsustainable pay/pension deals. Private sector unions are one road back to a revitalized Middle Class."
