Campaign themes

2014

Courard-Hauri's website highlighted the following campaign themes:[1]

Voting

  • Excerpt: "But there are many other ways to vote that actually work better in terms of electing the candidate who best represents the district. California has gone to a system of open primaries with a runoff election, for example, and early indications are that this is creating a delegation that is more interested in pragmatic compromise."

Money in politics

  • Excerpt: "I consider money in politics to be a real threat to democracy, especially at this point in history when wealth is concentrated to an extent not seen since the Gilded Age, and corporate funding is becoming increasingly deregulated."

Iowa and Climate

  • Excerpt: "With simple, inexpensive policy improvements, we can ensure that Iowa remains a national and global leader in alternative energy and climate change mitigation. Iowa can't solve the climate problem alone; at some point we will need comprehensive national and international efforts."

The Minimum Wage

  • Excerpt: "The minimum wage in Iowa needs to be raised to the point where entry-level jobs can support a frugal, but not impoverished, lifestyle."

Marriage equality

  • Excerpt: "It ought to go without saying that all people must be equal under the law, regardless of sexual orientation. There is nothing complex about equality, and I will fight against any efforts to limit it in Iowa."
