Dr. David Hill has spent his career caring for children’s health in North Carolina. A Memphis native educated at Rice University and the University of Texas McGovern School of Medicine, he moved to North Carolina in 1994 to join UNC’s nationally top-ranked residency program in internal medicine and pediatrics, graduating in 1998. He moved to Wilmington in 2002, where he and his wife Christy, a pediatric physician assistant, have raised 5 now-adult children. He continues to practice inpatient and outpatient pediatrics, most recently with UNC Children’s Health at Novant New Hanover Regional Medical Center and at the MedNorth Community Health Center. Christy provides behavioral and mental health care to youths at Coastal Horizons.
  • We all deserve the freedom to make our own medical decisions and to get the care we need when we need it. Unfortunately, my opponent told this community he would oppose an extreme abortion ban but then caved to extremists and voted six times to ban abortion. I work with OB-GYNs every day and have seen how this ban is harming women and putting lives at risk. I’m running to defend reproductive freedom because the women of North Carolina deserve the freedom to make their own healthcare decisions — including abortion, IVF, and birth control — without interference from the government.
  • Public education is essential to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential. But while public schools suffer, hundreds of millions of our tax dollars flow to charter schools and exclusive, unaccountable (often religious) private schools. North Carolina ranks 49th in the US for public school funding compared to GDP, and teachers spend on average $1,300 per year of their own money on school supplies. We must fully fund our public schools, give teachers a real inflation-adjusted pay raise, and ensure that the 1.4 million students in public schools receive a high-quality education.
  • We all deserve the opportunity to work hard and succeed, but that’s getting harder to do in today’s economy. As a doctor speaking with patients and now as a candidate, I hear from people every day who are struggling to make ends meet. We can and will do more to boost our local economy, lower costs, and put more money in the pockets of residents. My economic priorities include helping small businesses thrive by cutting red tape and investing in their success, solving the housing affordability crisis and high cost of homeowners insurance, and lowering taxes on hardworking families.
As a physician, I know that affordable healthcare is essential to ensuring the well-being of our community, but right now, healthcare costs are a major concern for many families in North Carolina. I have seen firsthand how affordable, high-quality healthcare can be life-changing for families struggling with high costs. I have also spent a great deal of time arguing with insurers, fighting on behalf of my patients for lower costs, and I want to do the same for families across the state. As a state senator, I will fight to cut healthcare costs like prescription drug prices and routine services and ensure that families and hardworking people aren’t being exploited by insurance companies.
As a doctor, I have spent my career helping families solve problems. Whether it’s safe housing, food insecurity, protection from violence, educational challenges, or fighting insurance companies for needed care, my job is to find real solutions for my patients.

Finding solutions requires approaching problems not with ideology but with pragmatism. I go where the evidence leads and work with anyone and everyone to ensure that my patients’ needs are met and they receive the best care possible. That’s the same approach I will bring to the General Assembly to ensure a healthy future for our region and our state.
The past, present, and future walk into a bar. It was tense.
