LWV candidate questionnaire

Hoekstra participated in a candidate questionnaire administered by the League of Women Voters of Dane County. The questions and his answers are below:

1. What in your professional and community background qualifies you for this elective office?

I have served as a citizen representative on the Sun Prairie School Board Planning Committee, since September of 2012, and believe I am well qualified and knowledgeable in School Board matters and can quickly transition to an active Board Member and can offer insight, expertise and a thoughtful approach to the matters of the Board. I believe I have the experience and background necessary working with teams, to be an effective School Board member. I am a mechanical engineer with over 20 years of experience in building operations and maintenance, with a focus on energy efficiency

2. What are the two most important issues facing your school district?

1. Maintaining the quality educational experience as State funding stagnates and State and Federal mandates are placed on the District

2. Planning for continued growth within the district

3. What are your ideas for addressing the issues you identified?

I believe we need to keep a continual close eye on all budget expenses, focus and prioritize on student centered costs and activities and work with the community, local politicians, parents and staff to lobby State Government for increases in per pupil funding in the next State budget.

I believe we need to keep a eye on our actual enrollment increases as compared to projections. I believe the District should organize a committee to explore and communicate options to the community to address future growth within the District. I believe we need to get input in a transparent way, from all stakeholders, and be sensitive to every ones concerns.[4]
