For most of my life, I have been a musician. I’ve performed with many of Hawaiʻi’s most popular entertainers and I own a small business called Audio Hawaiʻi. Besides performing on stage, I run a recording studio and sell audio samples of Hawaiian implements online that other people can use in their own creations. As you might have guessed, I am not a career politician. I am just like most of you. I am for a government that represents the people it serves. I want people to have input into the laws that govern their lives. Politicians should uphold the desires of their constituents, not push their personal agenda through without any input from the public. I want to be a new voice in the council. Your voice.
  • IMPROVING OUR PARKS, REPAIRING AGING FACILITIES The windward side has some of the nicest parks and beach parks on the island, but they are marred by overgrown weeds and maintenance issues in the restrooms and other park facilities. As one resident recently pointed out to me, Kailua Recreational Center has had broken boarded up windows in the exercise/classrooms for years; the playground, which is heavily used by young families, has a lot of broken equipment; and the pavilion needs a makeover, like many of our other park facilities.
  • PREVENTING SEWAGE SPILLS AND OCEAN POLLUTION Brown water advisories and sewage spill warnings are issued for windward bays after many of our rainstorms. With all the technology available throughout the world, surely we can do better for our sea life and ourselves. Some upgrades are budgeted for our Aikahi sewer plant, but we have had upgrades in the past, and we continue to have sewage spills when it rains.
  • BOOSTING PUBLIC SAFETY Throughout the years of growing up in Kailua, I have never felt unsafe walking around at night. This isn’t the case anymore. In addition, we have had “smash and grab” attacks on our small businesses and more property crime and even violent crime in our towns. Kailua, Kaneohe and Waimanalo are unrecognizable to the kupuna who grew up here.
Keeping Hawaiʻi beautiful and safe. For example, the Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden, the beautiful park is no longer in pristine condition. The comfort station has been closed for years. The popular botanical garden gallery has been shut down for several months, supposedly for repairs and renovations that donʻt appear to be a work in progress, and the well-used classroom gets drenched on the inside when it rains because the roof needs repairs.

A few simple fixes could bring our parks up to their full potential and make them safer, cleaner and more accessible to the public. Partnering with community groups to adopt-a-park could help to address some of the bigger issues that parks workers cannot manage because of limited staffing.
I looked up to my brother, Jim Kauahikaua. He was a geophysicist at the Hawaiʻi Volcano Observatory. A few years back, the volcano was erupting and people’s homes were threatened. Jim was the Hawaiʻi Volcano Observatory’s representative at public meetings where he had to update people on the status of the eruption.

He fielded all sorts of questions, some unrealistic and some good. I watched him answer each and every question with grace - no attitude and no demeaning manner. He simply tried to educate everybody - including the media - equally. This man, who was a Doctor of Geophysics, patiently answered every question without a “do you know who I am” or an “I’ve worked all day and can’t be bothered by your questions” kind of attitude. He was a wonderful role model and example of how we should all treat everyone equally, and not look down on anyone or brush them aside.
Integrity, honesty, a good work ethic and a willingness to help people live better lives.
After I'm gone, I'd like people to think of me, smile and know that I tried to leave this world a little better than when I got here.
The first historical event that I remember is the assassination of JFK. I was in 3rd grade and had just come out of the bathroom. A teacher ran past me crying and I didn't know why. When I got back to the classroom I found out.
