David Lewis was a candidate for District 3 representative on the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees in Texas. He ran for the seat in the general election on May 9, 2015. He lost the election.[1]

Lewis actively campaigned on his opposition to Superintendent Mike Miles. He described the board's relationship with Miles, saying,

The relationship between Mr. Miles and some DISD board members is, in my view, damaged beyond repair. I am appalled at the fact that Mr. Miles had a board trustee forcefully removed from a district campus.I believe it is time to move on. It is time to find a superintendent that truly understands our unique school district and it's history.[2]

Opposition

Three of the nine seats on the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees were up for election on May 9, 2015. The seats were elected by designated geographic areas in the district with only registered voters in each area eligible to vote for that area's assigned seat.

District 1 incumbent Elizabeth Jones did not file to seek re-election. Edwin Flores and Kyle Renard ran for the open seat, and Flores was elected to the board. District 3 incumbent Dan Micciche faced challenger David Lewis, while District 9 incumbent Bernadette Nutall contended with challenger Damarcus Offord. Both incumbents won re-election.

Campaign themes

2015

Lewis provided the following statements on his campaign website:

CLASSROOM DISCIPLINE

If elected as Trustee, I plan to have our district’s teaching programs examined and compared to that of various institutions that have a higher student success rate. The goal of these efforts would be to see what areas our students are performing well in and what areas need improvement, as well as what resources need to be made available to our students to assist them in their endeavors. A call for change on the parents behalf will also be made to ensure they are doing their part to increase the success of our students throughout the district.[2]

ACADEMIC COMPETITION

We need less testing and more science fairs, math bowls, debates, and spelling bees. Also, how about a district wide STAARs competition every year for the most improved school. Low performing schools will have the highest chance of winning cool prizes from the community and corporate partners. Currently, there are only 11 Dallas ISD schools that compete in the county spelling bee. If elected, my goal is to increase that number to 200.[2]

VOCATIONAL TRAINING

In order to create more career opportunities for students within our high schools, I believe that efforts should be made to reach out to local companies within our community to work with them collectively in order to obtain the resources (ex. training programs and equipment) that are needed to achieve this goal. These endeavors would be beneficial for all stakeholders as the companies who are proactive in this process will have the benefit of hiring skilled, professional individuals as well as receive free advertising.[2]

RESTORING MORALE

One of the many aspects of my campaign is to restore teacher morale. I believe this can be done through the process of re-innovating the teacher evaluation system, alleviating teachers from forced styles of teaching, bridging the communication gap between teachers and their executive directors, and letting the teachers’ voice’s be heard without the fear of backlash.

Also, I feel that seeking a new superintendent from a group of local leaders will not only save money from recruiting candidates nationally, but will increase the overall success of Dallas ISD and the community that it serves.[2]
