|I am 56 years old and most recently served as CEO of a Massachusetts-based healthcare nonprofit, the Massachusetts Health Council, a 105-year-old organization that advocates for healthcare policies that enable everyone to live and work in thriving, healthy communities. I have significant experience in both state and local politics, having served as a lawyer and chief of staff in the Massachusetts State Senate and in the administration of former Mass Governor Deval Patrick. I have long been an active member of his community, having served on the Mansfield Industrial Development Commission and the Historical Commission. I am also a long-time member of the town's Democratic Town Committee. I was a volunteer attorney coach for the Mansfield High School Mock Trial Team. I am a member of the Sturdy Health Foundation and on the Board of 2Gether We Eat, a Worcester based organization that allows middle school students to learn hydroponic farming.
I am a proud husband to fellow attorney Christie Martin, as well as a dedicated and devoted father to three young women, all of whom attended Mansfield Public Schools. My hobbies include motorcycles, CrossFit, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and consistently not solving the Wordle in fewer guesses than his wife.- The access and affordability of housing in the area is a major problem that needs to be addressed. Increasing the supply of housing requires an "everything bagel" approach. We need to try many different policies. Many young people can not afford to live in the area they grew up in and we are losing that sense of community and attachment that helps a community thrive.
- We have some of the best health care in the world right here in the 1st Bristol District, but the high cost of and inaccessibility of health care is a major problem. It is very difficult to find a primary care doctor taking new patients and it often takes months to get an appointment. The problems with our health care system require big, systemic changes to our health care payment system. We need to transform our system from a "sick care system, that pays providers to heal people when they are sick to one that actually incentives keeping people health. In the meantime, there are things we can do. We can encourage more providers with loan repayment assistance when they commit to working in the state and in certain areas.
- Our mental health care system is broken. Access to services takes too long and, in a crisis that can be devastating. This is especially true for young people who, even prior to the pandemic, were reporting high rates of depression, anxiety, eating disorders, self harm and other indicators of poor mental health. Some of the cause of deteriorating mental health is this generation's access to social media at an early age. I think Mass should be a leader in finding ways to limit student access to their cell phones and social media during the school day.
I am also very passionate about young people's mental health and finding ways to reverse the deterioration of many mental health indicators.
