David J. McDermott is the former Colorado Controller. McDermott was appointed controller on April 1, 2008.[1] He retired from the controller's office effective June 30, 2013 in order to accept a new position as Director of the Colorado Financial Reporting System Implementation.[2] He was succeeded by Deputy Controller Robert Jaros on May 1, 2013.

Prior to his appointment, McDermott was an accountant in the state controller's office from 1992 to 2008. Before entering state employment with a job in the Colorado state auditor's office in 1989, he worked in the residential home building industry in Denver.

Biography

McDermott earned a B.S. in accounting from the University of Colorado at Denver.[3]

In 1989, McCermott started his first professional job at the Office of the State Auditor and passed the CPA exam.[1] McDermott joined the Office of the State Controller (OSC) in 1992 as an accountant.[1] From 1992 until being appointed as State Controller on April 1, 2008, he worked in and later managed the Reporting & Analysis Section of the OSC which prepares the state’s financial statements and other statutory and constitutionally required reports.[1]

McDermott was appointed controller on April 1, 2008.[1] As the controller is a permanent employee of the state, he is not subject to periodic reappointment.
