McDevitt issued the following statement regarding his bid for office:

My father passed away shortly after I turned eleven years old. Subsequently, I was greatly influenced by a mentor, associated with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, that had been involved with Common Cause.

Though life was not easy, I always looked out for the challenged by participating and volunteering as a Big Brother, volunteering in AIDS fundraising, and other charitable organizations. My passion and goal is to help as many people as possible by contributing to policy for people, especially those that are middle-class and below. [6]
