Hello, my name is David Moritz and I’m running for Asheville City Council. I am running because I love Asheville and we need to get back to pragmatic leadership. My priorities are infrastructure, housing, safety and economy. I’m a mechanical engineer that spent the first few years of my career working on infrastructure projects, including two years in Venezuela helping build infrastructure. I know how to work in a team in a challenging environment to get things done. Western Carolina is going to spend $1 billion on infrastructure. We need someone with experience with this on Council. Regarding housing, for the past 25 years, I have been in the real estate business and I have an MBA with a focus on finance and real estate. 12 years ago, I started my own development company and I’ve built housing and warehouses and redeveloped buildings downtown. We need to prioritize building housing in areas with the infrastructure like downtown.  Safety is the next priority. It’s one of the main duties of our local government. Having been the victim of a hate crime, I have personal experience that has led me to advocate for safety of our community. And when we talk about economy, it means both a strong economy, especially for our small businesses, so we can thrive but also the economy of not taking taxpayer funds for granted and spending our money wisely. I understand budgeting and accountability as a business leader. I hope you support me as I bring common sense to City Hall.
  • I am running for City Council because Asheville needs pragmatic, experienced leadership. I bring 30 years of engineering, business, and real-estate experience: skills directly relevant to managing a city facing major infrastructure, housing, safety, and budget challenges. I’ve built complex projects, run a successful local small business, and understand how systems work in the real world. If elected to Council, I will bring accountability, discipline, and common-sense problem-solving to City Hall.
  • Housing is a critical issue in Asheville. I bring 25 years of real-estate experience, an MBA in finance and real estate, and 12 years building housing and redevelopment projects here in Asheville. I understand how to deliver housing that fits existing infrastructure and strengthens neighborhoods. Asheville must focus on building where services already exist, streamline processes, and avoid policies that push development outside the city. My background allows me to evaluate projects clearly, protect taxpayers, and support practical solutions that actually increase housing supply while protecting existing residents.
  • We have recently found out that we have a $30 million gap in our budget in Asheville. This shouldn’t be a surprise because it was years in the making. We have to focus on spending on the services that are core to the proper functioning of our city and focus on growing our revenue base without burdening our long term residents. This means smart growth, particularly in our downtown areas and transit lines. I also believe we need someone on council with relevant financial management experience. I have an MBA in finance and have spent the majority of my career advising major companies regarding their financing decisions. We need to bring professional financial oversight to our City.
I am passionate about zoning reform, which will allow Asheville to thrive and grow while protecting the areas and places that we collectively want to protect. Our zoning is outdated and based on a suburban philosophy that we no longer have the space to accommodate. We can protect many parts of our city but we must find places like downtown and transit areas that we can make more vibrant for people to live, work and play.
