|I talk with so many Oklahomans who are passionate about their communities and their state, but feel so disconnected from the process of governing. They are disheartened by the system and would rather disengage than be disappointed.
Oklahoma has one of the lowest voter turnout rates in the entire country. Even though I was registered to vote at 18, I didn’t cast my first ballot until I was 30 - I know I’m not the only one in this boat. This was after I realized that I’d been purged from the voter rolls for being an “inactive voter.”
Voting in Oklahoma, while easy in theory, has its barriers to participation, and voter purges are only one of the problems. Even for voters who are ready to participate, there aren’t always opportunities because too many of our State Legislators are running unopposed, or in races that will be decided in a closed primary because candidates from only one party are on the ballot.
This is why I am running as an Independent and why I will be documenting my process along the way. I hope this campaign can help demystify what it takes to be a Candidate for Office in Oklahoma, and inspire others to step up and step into the process.- Everyone gets a voice at the table. I’m here to listen and represent YOU.
- Kindness, respect, and understanding above all else. We need it in our communities and we need it in the Capitol.
- Quality of life for all Oklahomans. Housing, taxes, education, and access to resources all contribute to creating a high quality of life for the people living in this state.
- Open minded to foreign or unconventional ideas
- Flexible to find common ground
- Open heart. We are all human.
- Pacient
- Enjoy the art of negotiation
- Finding common ground
- Active in including as many peoples as possible.
- Act / Vote in their best interests, while thinking of Oklahoma as a whole community.
- Provide as much information to their constituents as possible. Gain their insight.
That said, my first "historical event" that rings loud is probably the Death of Princess Diana. Growing up I had heard that name several times (she was very popular with the tabloid magazines that were stacked at eye level for me in the grocery lines), but I wasn't really sure who she was, why she was so popular.
But I will never forget the chatter from adults the day she died. How tragic the situation was. What the world would be like now that she was gone. But it was then that I realized how people can have strong emotional connections with someone so far away. With someone they had never even met. Our human connection is that strong, but yet that fragile.
I then started working for Brixton Square Movie Theater at age 15. That only last about 3 months. Too many times I had to pre-pop that popcorn.
Then The Athletic Village for 3 years. They ended up going out of business, but what a fun high school job for a theater nerd.
This campaign's main goal is to show people you don't have to have years of experience in government. You don't have to intern for a senator, or hold office in your student government, or log millions of hours with a non-profit to be a great candidate to represent your community.
- A handful of others
The current petition process is adequately secure and already exceedingly restrictive. The impact of HB 1105 would severely hamper our constitutional right to the initiative and referendum petition process.
Since statehood, only 21% of initiative petitions filed and 37% of referendum petitions filed have made it to the ballot
Only 6% of initiative petitions filed and 11% of referendum petitions filed were eventually passed
Citizens use good judgement and vote carefully.
