David Porter (Texas)
David Porter is a former member of the Texas Railroad Commission, a regulatory body that oversees the oil and natural gas industries in Texas. He was elected to this position in November 2010.[1] Porter was initially planning to run for re-election in 2016, but dropped his bid in December 2015.[2]
Biography
Before taking office, Commissioner Porter built a successful small business around his CPA practice in Midland Texas, providing accounting and tax services to oil and gas producers, royalty owners, oil field service companies and other small businesses and individuals. On November 2, 2010, David J. Porter was elected to serve a six-year term as a Texas Railroad Commissioner. Since taking office, Commissioner Porter served on the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission as well as the Interstate Mining Compact Commission as an Associate Representative by Texas Governor Rick Perry.[3]

Porter had initially planned to run for re-election in 2016, but dropped his bid in December 2015. "Now is a good time to focus on my family and my return to the private sector," he said in a statement.[2]

Porter won election to the Texas Railroad Commission in 2010, defeating Jeff Weems (D), Roger Gary (L) and Art Browning (G).

Porter was born in Fort Lewis, Washington in 1956 while his father was serving in the US Army. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harding University in May of 1977 with a Bachelor's Degree in accounting. He passed the CPA exam on his first attempt in November of 1977 and became a Texas CPA in September 1981, the same year he moved to Midland.
David met his wife, Cheryl, while attending Harding University, and they were married in 1979. They are the proud parents of one daughter and are also the proud grandparents of a two-year old granddaughter.[1]
