David Sam is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court of Utah. He joined the court in 1985 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. Sam has served on senior status.[1]

Early life and education

A native of Indiana, Sam graduated from Brigham Young University in Provo, UT with his bachelor's degree in 1957 and later graduated from the University of Utah with his bachelor's degree in 1960.[1]

Military service

After law School, Sam enlisted in the Air Force from 1961 to 1963 and served in the JAG Corps.[1]

Professional career

After the JAG Corps, Sam was a private practice attorney in the State of Utah from 1963 to 1976. Sam served on a part-time Duchesne County Attorney from 1966 to 1972 and was elected Duchesne County from 1972 to 1974. From 1976 to 1985, Sam was a judge on the Utah Fourth Judicial District. He also served as a part-time faculty member at Brigham Young University from 1977 to 1985.[1]

Judicial career

On the recommendation of Senator Orrin Hatch, Sam was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on September 9, 1985, to a seat vacated by Judge Aldon Anderson as Anderson assumed senior status. Sam was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 16, 1985, and received commission on October 16, 1985. Sam served as the chief judge of the court from 1997 to 1999 before later assuming senior status on November 1, 1999.[1] Sam was succeeded in this position by Paul Cassell.
