What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Honesty and commitment to serve the 99% instead of the very wealthy and big corporate class
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
Long experience as a human rights and peace activist and the fact that I am an environmental/climate scientist.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To eliminate the shockingly high income and racial disparities that now exist in DC by building a stronger movement for "The many, Not the Few!"
What legacy would you like to leave?
A more green and just community for all residents enjoying self-determination as the 51st State
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
The 1948 election and my parents support for Henry (Not George!) Wallace, candidate of the Progressive Party, I was 5 years old.
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
My first real job was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Hunter College, then University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) (1 year each), then on the faculty of Howard University where I taught for 39 years, now Professor Emeritus having retired at the end of June, 2012.
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Halloween, also my birthday.
What is your favorite book? Why?
Just recently published my own book with my older son Peter, "The Earth is Not for Sale", an in-depth analysis of climate change, renewable energy, agroecokogy and the changes in political economy necessary to create the Other World that is Still Possible. What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
Our two cats, mother and daughter, adopted as strays from Baltimore.
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Imagine by John Lennon. "You may think I am a dreamer, but I am not the only one"
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
My whole life has been devoted to the struggle for human rights.
What kind of skills or expertise do you believe would be the most helpful for the holders of this office to possess?
Ability to listen and learn from the residents, translating this into legislation and using my office to organize for change along the lines I have outlined in previous answers.
What qualities does this office possess that makes it a unique and important part of the local government?
The At-Large member of the DC Council legislates and conducts oversight just as the other elected members of this body.
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for holders of this office to have previous experience in government or politics?
Yes.
