Ulibarri ran for re-election in 2012. He was defeated by Clemente Sanchez in the June 5, 2012, Democratic primary.[1][2][3]

On November 4, 2008, Ulibarri was elected to the 30th District Seat in the New Mexico Senate, besting Jose Silva (R).[4] Ulibarri raised $77,821 for his campaign, while Silva raised $5,000.[5]
