Campaign themes

2014

Brimhall provided the following statement on her campaign website:

The idea of "High Standards" is a wonderful idea, and SHOULD be implemented in all school districts. It is the community that should decide what those standards are and how to reach them. This is not just about standards, because in some cases, Common Core also informs the curriculum. A lot of the latest text books are Common Core aligned. Sometimes, innovation for the sake of innovation creates its own issues. I have seen many complaints about the way Common Core has changed the way younger children learn math. I do not support the Arizona College and Career Readiness "Standards." Or, in its former name, Common Core.

As a homeowner, I am very aware of the stress even a small increase in a mortgage payment can bring.

It has taken Gilbert Public Schools years to build the reputation for providing a World Class Education. I will maintain that reputation.

I will treat all teachers, students, board members, and administration with respect and dignity.

I will remember that all taxpayers are deserving of an honest accounting, and an open budgeting process.

I will remember that I am a voice for the taxpayers, and I will act responsibly with the money entrusted to GPS.

I will be mindful of my priorities at all times. Students, Parents, Teachers.

I will research, ask questions, fully understand, and be able to articulate my position on any vote for policy or the budget.

The teachers need to be put back on the grid for their pay. It is too disruptive to morale to be given temporary "stipends", only to have them taken away. I will search out the best possible, permanent solution, that doesn't depend on "extra" monies.

The current school boundaries in Gilbert Public Schools need to be reviewed, and, if the need is found, to be realigned. This could have a 3-fold effect:

More equitable class sizes district wide
A better handle on current and future growth
An even more efficient transportation plan.

GPS has made great strides in transparency, but there is a way to go. The materials needed for board members to make informed, well thought out votes should be provided more than 24 hours in advance of the agenda items being voted on. This generosity of information can only help to engender trust from the community.[2][6]
