The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was March 14, 2014. Steve Beck was unopposed in the Democratic primary, while incumbent Dawn Pettengill was unopposed in the Republican primary. Beck faced Pettengill in the general election.[6][7][8] Incumbent Pettengill defeated challenger Beck in the general election.[9]

Pettengill ran in the 2012 election for Iowa House of Representatives District 75. Pettengill ran unopposed in the Republican primary on June 5, 2012, and defeated Sandra K. Cronbaugh (D) in the general election on November 6, 2012.[10][11]

Pettengill won re-election to the 39th District Seat in 2010 with no opposition. She was also unopposed in the Republican primary. The general election took place on November 2, 2010.[12]

On November 4, 2008, Pettengill was re-elected to the 39th District Seat in the Iowa House of Representatives, defeating Terry Hertle (D).[13] Pettengill raised $117,687 for her campaign, while Hertle raised $39,801.[14]
