It was time for Quasimodo to retire. He made his announcement and posted flyers inviting applicants to come to Notre Dame. On the designated hour and day dozens of applicants were lined up in the bell tower. Quasimodo welcomed them and then gave a demonstration of how to jump on the bell, make it ring, and then jump off. As luck would have it, the first applicant ran at the bell, hit it with his face and then plunged to his death in the courtyard below where the startled passersby, clustered around the body. “Who is it?” Asked one. Another responded, “I don’t know, but his face rings a bell.” A new face appeared in the cluster and the man proclaimed, “My goodness! That fellow is a dead ringer for Quasimodo.” About this time Quasimodo made his way to the courtyard, shaking his head, and exclaiming to all, “I had a hunch back there that he was going to fall.”
