I am a fifth-generation Texan and a third-generation Houstonian. At 64 years old, I have lived half my life in the district I am running for in the US Congress, Texas 36. I have been married for 32 years to a former NASA pilot and US Air Force veteran. We have three sons, one bonus daughter, one bonus son, two granddogs, and a grandcat. I am a rock radio Hall of Famer, the author of 17 books mostly on how to succeed, a successful entrepreneur, a motivational speaker, and the playwright of the critically acclaimed Alzheimer’s play, The Woman in the Mirror. My top issues are women’s reproductive rights, protecting Social Security and Medicare, and fighting the lies, gaslighting, and corruption currently at the highest levels of our government.
  • Protecting women's rights inluding reproductive healthcare, access to birth control, IVF and surrogacy, stronger laws protecting women against all violence, and keeping no-fault divorce.
  • As an American aging into the Social Security and Medicare system, I will fight to protect what is ours. We have spent a lifetime paying into these systems only to see Republicans continually rob from us to pay for unnecessary wars and give massive tax cuts to the rich.
  • I will fight to stop the lies, gaslighting, and corruption that has taken over much of our federal government all the way up to the highest levels of leadership and justice.
Women's reproductive rights, protecting Social Security and Medicare, voter rights, safe gun policy, a strong border solution, bipartisan cooperation for the betterment of our country.
Ann Richards. My husband. My mother. All honest good people who actually care about others.
The role of government is and always has been to make life better for all Americans.
I helped others be successful.
I worked for my Dad's real estate company delivering in the mailroom beginning when I was 12. I did that for the next three summers until I went to work in customer service for a local bank as part of a high school program.
Dale Carnegie's "How To win Friends and Influence People" - it's about helping others be successful.
Not being able to help as many people as I would like.
No, it should be four with two terms only. You need time to get things done.
They are needed at all levels of government including the Supreme Court.
Several - the latest all involve women who have been left to die because they could not get the proper and immediate reproductive healthcare they needed.
A guy is watching TV and he hears a knock at the door. He opens the door and no one is there. He does see a snail on the mat, picks it up and throws it. Several months later there's a knock at the door again. He opens the door and the snail says, "Hey, what was that all about??"
NOT to intimidate each other and not as political weapons.
None yet. I have not applied and am not accepting money.
Science, Space, and Technology

Small Business
Ethics

Education and the Workforce
Full transparency and government accountability is needed. A prime example is our military - we are spending billions yet our incoming lower ranked service men and women are liging in many areas on handouts and food stamps. This is unacceptable.

Candidate Connection

Dayna Steele completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Steele's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Health care The ACA needs to be strengthened and protected from the political games now being played with the system, lower Medicare coverage to 55, offer young first time buyers a graduated discount on their first few years of coverage, and allow Medicare to negotiate drug and device prices which would save us over $1.2T over the next 10 years. And, I would work with the Medicare For All coalition to create a plan moving forward to cover all Americans. Education We need to level the education playing field and set that level high with emphasis on science, technology engineering and math to create skilled labor to fill current and future job needs. We need to pass the Rural Broadband Act and get high speed Internet access into the hands of students, entrepreneurs, and businesses. And, there needs to be affordable college opportunity for everyone with tuition offers for those economically challenged but with the desire to succeed and give back in their communities. Immigration We need to use our intelligence, empathy, and coordinated law enforcement at the border - breaking up families and deporting immigrants who have become part of our communities is not the way to go. We need a comprehensive immigration plan moving forward that allows for a path to citizenship. We need to pass a clean DREAM Act. And, we need to solve the root of the problem - we need to work with Central America to subvert the corruption and violence leading to the harsh conditions driving their own citizens to look for better. Denying aid to these countries will only make the problem worse.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Medicare for All needs to be on the table, preventative care and pre-existing conditions must be covered at rates families can actually afford.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

My husband, former NASA pilot Dr. Charles Justiz. He is the most honest, compassionate, intelligent person I have ever known.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Honesty, integrity, empathy, a willingness to listen and learn.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

Honesty, integrity, empathy, a willingness to listen and learn.

What is your favorite holiday? Why?

Why? Thanksgiving ... gravy.

What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?

Kitchen - I love to cook and gather everyone around the table for conversation.

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

My Mom's Alzheimer's

What process do you favor for redistricting?

Non-partisan commissions using the same computer models we have now but equally distributing those who identify as Democrat, Republican and Independent.

What qualities does the U.S. House of Representatives possess that makes it unique as an institution?

It was our checks and balances which seem to have disappeared, that's why I am running.

Do you believe that it's beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics?

Not necessarily.

What do you perceive to be the United States’ greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?

Healthcare

Do you believe that two years is the right term length for representatives?

Yes

What are your thoughts on term limits?

We need term limits.
