Four seats were up for election on the Dayton Board of Education on November 5, 2013. Incumbents Joe Lacey and Ronald C. Lee, as well as Adil T. Baguirov and Hazel G. Rountree defeated a write-in candidate and won the four at-large seats.

Dayton is the county seat of Montgomery County and located in southwestern Ohio. The city's population was 141,527 according to the 2010 U.S. Census.[1]
Demographics
The 2010 U.S. Census found that 15% of Columbus residents over 25 years old held undergraduate degrees compared to a 24.5% rate for the state of Ohio. Dayton had a median income of $28,843 in 2010 compared to $48,071 for Ohio. The poverty rate for Dayton was 32.5% in 2010 compared to an 14.8% rate for the rest of the state.[1]

Method of board member selection
The Dayton Board of Education consists of seven members who are elected at-large to four-year terms. There was no primary election on September 10, 2013 and the general election was held on November 5, 2013. Four seats on the board were up for election in 2013 and three seats were on the ballot on November 3, 2015.[3]
Candidates for the Dayton Board of Education must be 18 years old, a resident of the district and not hold city office concurrent to board service. The Montgomery County Board of Elections required a $30 filing fee as well as at least 300 signatures by the filing deadline on August 7, 2013.[4]

What was at stake?
Incumbents Joe Lacey and Ronald C. Lee were running for re-election to the board. Lacey and Lee faced challengers Adil T. Baguirov, Walter James Hickman, Jr. and Hazel G. Rountree in the November 5, 2013 election. Hickman did not file nominating petitions to be included on the ballot but filed as a certified write-in candidate with the Montgomery County Board of Elections.[3]

Additional elections on the ballot
The Dayton Board of Education election shared the ballot with other local measures. Residents of Dayton voted in the mayoral race and chose two members of the Dayton City Council. The ballot also included two local issues dealing with alcohol sales at area businesses as well as an issue dealing with electrical power aggregation.[7]
