Dean Nickel is perhaps best known for his time as an investigator for the Government Accountability Board (GAB) during the John Doe investigations related to Scott Walker (R).[1][2]

Prior to becoming an independent contractor, Nickel headed up the Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) under the Wisconsin Department of Justice. He had been employed by the DCI since 1980.[1] He retired in 2006.[3]

He also worked for four years as a police officer in Brodhead, Wis.[3]

He graduated from the University of Wisconsin and the FBI Academy.[1]

Two John Doe investigations, beginning in 2010 and ending in 2015, were launched by Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm (D) into the activities of staff and associates of Gov. Scott Walker (R).[4] Nickel was appointed as a special investigator for the GAB on September 10, 2013.[3]
