Two of the five seats on the Brevard Public Schools Board of Education were up for by-district general election on November 8, 2016. Four candidates filed to run for the District 3 seat in the by-district primary election on August 30, 2016: newcomers Darcey Addo, Richard Charbonneau, Tina Descovich, and Larry Finch. Addo and Descovich advanced to the general election because no candidates received more than 50 percent of the primary vote, and Descovich won the seat. For the District 4 seat, incumbent Karen Henderson was joined in the primary election by three challengers: Dana DeSantis, Dean Paterakis, and Matt Susin. Henderson and Susin advanced from the primary election to the general election, and Susin successfully ousted the incumbent.[3][4]

The August 26, 2014, general election in Brevard County featured three seats up for election. Andy Ziegler was the only incumbent to seek re-election in 2014. He faced challengers Denise Coyle, Dale D. Davis and Dean Paterakis in the District 5 election. The general elections for Districts 1 and 2 featured challengers seeking to replace outgoing board members Barbara A. Murray and Michael Krupp. Misty Belford and Paul Chinaris were competing in the District 1 race while John Craig, Bob Mentillo and Keith Yarbrough were vying for the District 2 seat.

The general election determined if candidates for each seat could garner a majority of the vote total. Since no candidate received 50 percent plus one of the general election votes in Districts 3 and 5, the top two vote recipients in those races advanced to the runoff election on November 4, 2014.

Belford won the general election for District 1. The races for Districts 3 and 5 were decided in the runoff election. Craig and Yarbrough advanced to the runoff election for District 3, while Ziegler and Coyle advanced for District 5.

Campaign themes

2014

Paterakis has been an outspoken critic of the school board for several years. On his campaign website for 2014, Paterakis has focused on criticizing and accusing current board members, especially the incumbent for District 5, Andy Ziegler. He also made the following statements on his campaign website.
Education background

I am the only candidate in this district that was/is a teacher, I have a Bachelor of Science degree in education, but most importantly, I have a passion for education.

Too many educational and procedural policies are voted and passed when they are nothing but a big waste of money and usually do nothing and even hurt the quality of education. I believe this happens because politicians have little knowledge of what will work and won't work in the classroom. And what I am seeing in the political arena today is that we are making education a lot more complicated than it needs to be. See link for same old song. I blame the publishers of textbooks and lobbyists for much of the chaos. It benefits these companies to sell "new and improved" materials to teach. I had overwhelming success in my own classroom. One of the main reasons is I did my best to challenge each child AND I involved the parents every step of the way AND I didn't use a lot of the overpriced, overcomplicated textbooks and materials that the schools would waste tax-payer money on. Many times I created my own materials or used books and materials bought off the shelf at local education stores. A good education shouldn't cost as much as we pay today. I will bring that successful experience to the school board and not be fooled by lobbyists' proposed education changes which is nothing more than the siphoning of tax-dollars.[8]

—Paterakis (2014)[2]

Ties to the district

I am the only candidate that will have two children in the Brevard School District.

Because I have two children that continue to attend Brevard Public Schools, my family and I will be directly affected by the policies of the school board. I want what is best for your children and my children.

I own many homes in Brevard County.

As with many homeowners, I have a major personal financial interest in making sure our schools are the best in the state and the nation. I will do what is needed to improve our schools which in turn will improve OUR property values.[8]

—Paterakis (2014)[2]

Principles

I stand on principles. I will not go along to get along.

I have a reputation of sticking to principles and doing what is right even though it may not be in my own personal interests or personal gain. In the recent past I have lost jobs when I stood up to principals who were discriminating against children and other teachers. 911 was called on me and I was physically removed from the Brevard School Board Building in Viera when I spoke against Common Core.

I have been nick-named Dean PaterRuckus by a co-worker because I seem to cause a ruckus when I deal with wrong-doing and I don't quit until the wrong-doings are addressed which usually causes some type of ruckus.[8]

—Paterakis (2014)[2]

Noteworthy events

On May 24, 2016, Paterakis was arrested for disrupting a school board meeting. He was quoted as having said to the board, "There are three things that are not long hidden - the sun, the moon and the truth," he said. "The truth will soon come out." Paterakis was trying to expose a high school teacher in the county who, Paterakis claimed, showed students an inappropriate picture of himself. The board chairman said Paterakis was "out of line" and stopped him from speaking. He refused to leave and was eventually carried out of the meeting by his arms and legs.[9]
