Debbie has spent more than 20 years as a community and public health nurse who has dedicated the better part of her professional nursing career to improving healthcare access, reducing cost, and optimizing healthcare experiences for the Low Country.

Debbie built her career in public health around ensuring that our community has access to the care its residents need to succeed. As such, watching the COVID crisis unfold in South Carolina is a big part of what drove her to run.

Debbie's a nurse, a mom, an educator, a scholar, an associate dean for nursing practice, a community leading coalition builder, and the wife of a 23 year United States Army veteran.

Upon taking office, she will be one of few women in the state's General Assembly, and one of only two state legislators with health care backgrounds.

Debbie is also proud of her community efforts outside of healthcare. After the heartbreaking massacre at Emanuel AME, Debbie helped lead a collaborative effort as part of the steering committee for the ""Illumination Project,"" at the request of Charleston's then police chief. The impact of this collaborative effort is featured in the National Law Enforcement Museum in Washington, DC.
  • Debbie understands the need to improve and maintain our roads and bridges to keep up with our growth, expand our economy, and spend less time trapped in our cars.
  • As an educator, Debbie believes we need to fully fund our school system to make sure our public schools are equipped with the resources teachers need to focus on student success.
  • As someone born and raised in the Low Country, Debbie wants to ensure our planning and development needs for infrastructure, schools, and our workforce are able to meet the demands of economic growth while protecting our natural resources.
The most vital policy issues to Debbie are the same as the majority of the residents of Senate District 44. The people of Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties want to be sure that we preserve and protect everything we love about the communities where we work, live, and play without sacrificing our quality of life. We need policy makers focused on things like shortening our morning drive to work, keeping our children safe and educated in high quality public schools, lowering the cost of health care, and making sure our economy continues to grow.
Empathy, the ability to work well with people from different backgrounds, and steely determination.
Born and raised in Moncks Corner, SC, Debbie came of age in the midst of the Civil Rights movement. Her class was one of the first to be integrated, and throughout the early years of her education she was overlooked by teachers and classmates who did not want her there and wrote her off as incapable. Encouraged by her parents, Debbie never gave up in the face of adversity. Her father used to tell her that "education equals independence, freedom, and the passage to success." She referred to those words often, receiving her Doctorate in Nursing and encouraging educational excellence for all South Carolinians.
The proven ability to form coalitions with a shared objective, and build bridges among people from various walks of life with different perspectives, is life experience that is more valuable than previous governmental/political experience.
Our greatest challenge in South Carolina is continuing to grow our population and economy while preparing in advance for those changes in terms of infrastructure, education, and public health. Additionally, with so much development and a heavy population on the coast, flooding and the increasing effects of climate change are tremendous issues we have to plan to tackle.
In favor of nonpartisan redistricting commission to take politics out of the process of deciding what our elective districts look like.
