Deborah Hernandez Mitchell (Republican Party) is a judge for Division 22 of the Kansas Eighteenth Judicial District. Her current term ends on January 8, 2029.

Hernandez Mitchell (Republican Party) ran for re-election for the Division 22 judge of the Kansas Eighteenth Judicial District. She won in the general election on November 5, 2024.

Hernandez Mitchell was appointed by Republican Governor Sam Brownback on July 6, 2015, to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Joseph Bribiesca.[1]

Education

Hernandez Mitchell received both her bachelor's degree and J.D. from the University of Kansas.[1]

Career

At the time of her judicial appointment, Hernandez Mitchell was an attorney with the law firm Woodard, Hernandez, Roth & Day. She is a former Sedgwick County prosecutor.[1]

In 14 of the districts of the Kansas District Courts, judges are chosen in partisan elections.[4] These judges serve four-year terms and run for re-election at the end of their terms.[5]

Qualifications
To serve on this court, a judge must be:[5]

  • a state and district resident;
  • a member in good standing of the state bar for at least five years; and
  • under the age of 70. If a sitting judge turns 70 while on the bench, he or she may serve out the term.
