Repp's website highlighted the following campaign themes:
“ | Instituting a Living Wage for Virginia Workers
Adjusted for inflation, the federal minimum wage was worth more in 1968 than today. The minimum wage does not rise at the rate of inflation but rather sits on the back burner until it is debated by legislators every few years in Washington. An individual working full time at minimum wage makes a mere $15,080 per year while an MIT study in 2015 calculated that cost of living in Virginia for one adult is $25,711 per year. Hardworking Virginians who hold a full-time position at minimum wage should not have to choose between turning on the heat when they go to sleep and paying rent that month. This is why Deborah Repp supports instituting a living wage for Virginia workers. This wage increase is not a handout, but rather a helping hand extended to those in our community that deserve it most. Life should be a challenging and rewarding experience, but there is no reason it cannot be just a little bit easier. A living wage in Virginia will do just that. Small Business Tax Reform As a former businesswoman, Deborah Repp knows what it takes to build a successful establishment from the ground up, and she wants to take that experience to the state Senate. From starting her own business in 1997 and building it from 3 employees to 150 employees to working as Policy Director for Lt. Governor Beyer, Deborah Repp has the capability and understanding to work for the business owners of Virginia. Deborah Repp has a proven record in working for small businesses. She supports eliminating the BPOL tax as well as the corporate income tax. Referring to her time as policy director, Debbie says, “We made repeated attempts to eliminate corporate taxation of businesses generating less than $100,000 in profits annually.” This legislation would have “eliminated corporate taxation for 92% of Virginia businesses.” She knows what it takes to make Virginia’s economy flourish again. Supporting Gov. McAuliffe’s Medicaid Expansion Plan While her opponent supports 40,000 Virginians losing their health insurance in the form of eliminating the Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. Obamacare), Deborah Repp supports the efforts of Governor McAuliffe to expand Virginia’s Medicaid to more of its citizens. Repp’s stance with Governor McAuliffe on the Medicaid expansion is an initiative that will only better the people of Virginia. Expanding access to healthcare to those who cannot afford it is not only a government responsibility but it is the morally right thing to do for the people of our great state. “Acceptance of these Medicaid funds would help insure an additional 400,000 low-income Virginians,” says Debbie. The men, woman, and children of Virginia should never have to neglect receiving the medical attention essential to their well-being because of a lack of insurance. Rolling Back Government Intrusion in Women’s Health As a life-long pro-choice Democrat, Deborah Repp wants to roll back the government’s intrusion in women’s health and reproductive rights. Deborah Repp recognizes that women have the ability to make their own decisions when it comes to their well-being, and she wants to work to keep abortions in Virginia safe and legal. Roe v. Wade is the law of the land and Debbie wants to make sure that Virginia does not go back “to the days of back-alley abortions and hospital wards full of women, particularly poor women, dying from sepsis.” Debbie has a long history of experience working in the nursing field and being a champion of healthcare for Virginians. She will continue to contest any efforts that will further reduce a woman’s right to choose and decrease access to reproductive care. In the Senate, Debbie will continue to do what she has always done, whether as a nurse, business owner, or policy director: care for the people of Virginia. Supporting Alternative Energy Production From the Shenandoah Valley to the Luray Caverns to the many beautiful preserved battlefields that Virginia has to offer, Deborah Repp understands the importance of preserving the environment and finding alternative energy sources. As a grandmother, she believes in the immense responsibility that all Virginians have to the future generation in preserving our beautiful rich lands. In order to create the best possible quality of environment for the children of Virginia, Debbie supports amending building codes so that Virginia moves to using more energy-efficient systems of construction and renewable materials when erecting new commercial and industrial buildings. She also believes in using incentives to encourage alternative energy research rather than mandates. When elected to the state Senate, Deborah Repp will find the balance between alternative energy sources and small business. It is our responsibility to create a world that is better for the future of all of Virginia’s children, and Debbie will work to fulfill that promise. Extending Public Transportation An effective public transportation system plays a key role in solving environmental, energy, and economic challenges. Businesses, families, and individuals all benefit. According to the American Public Transportation Association, use is up 39% since 1995, which outpaces population growth (21%). And for every $1 invested in public transportation, communities see $4 in economic return. Debbie would like to see the citizens of Virginia's 12th Senate District reap those benefits.[2][3] |
