Three of the seven seats on the Rochester Public Schools School Board were up for general election on November 8, 2016. In his bid for re-election to Seat 1, incumbent Richard Hinds was defeated by challenger Don Barlow. Seat 3 incumbent Deborah Seelinger won re-election after defeating John League in a primary election on August 9, 2016, and Bobbie Gallas in the general election. The race for the open Seat 7 featured candidates Ahmed Ragab and Mark Schleusner. Schleusner won election to the seat.[3][5][6]

League announced that he was dropping out of the race on July 24, 2016. Because the candidate withdrawal deadline had already passed, his name still appeared on the primary election ballot.[7]

Campaign themes

2016

Seelinger highlighted the following issues on her campaign website:

1. Ensuring Quality Public Education for Our Children:

-It’s simple: Students should achieve one year of growth for every year of school; the MN Growth Model, a measure of the MCA test can show us these results
-Teachers should be trained and well-prepared to meet students where they are and take them further
- Students should graduate prepared for any post-secondary option they choose

2. Promoting Open and Honest Communication:
-Communication must be essential to the way we do business
-Communication should be based on active listening and respect for diverse perspectives
-District communication needs to be timely, clear, complete and consistent

3. Establishing Sound Decision-making Practices:
-Bring financial and human resources into alignment with the aims and goals of the district and community
-Ask the questions: Is it good for the students? Is it good for the staff? Is it good for the community?

4. Engaging and Collaborating with Primary Stakeholders:
-Promote benefits of parent involvement and the idea that a child’s learning is a shared responsibility
-Offer Staff Development on a range of family involvement topics

5. Working From Within Our Community:
-Encourage continued collaboration between the school district and community agencies
-Engage community members in district operations through district-wide committee service and site involvement[10]
