Deborra Garrett is a judge for the Whatcom County Superior Court in Whatcom County, Washington. She was elected to a four-year term on November 6, 2012, and was sworn into office on January 11, 2013.[1] Garrett filed for re-election in 2016 and won automatically because she faced no challengers. Her most recent term expired in 2020.
Education
Garrett received her undergraduate degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1972 and her J.D. degree from George Washington University in 1976.[2]
Career
From 1993 until her election to the court in 2012, Garrett was a partner at the law firm of Carmichael Clark, P.S. in Bellingham, Washington.[3]
Elections
2016
Washington held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. Candidates for district and superior court seats had to file for election by May 20, 2016. Primary elections were held on August 2, 2016, for six seats where more than two candidates filed for election.
Garrett won re-election without appearing on a ballot in 2016 because no challengers emerged by the May 2016 filing deadline.[4] In counties with a population that is greater than 100,000, if only one superior court candidate files for election for a judgeship, that candidate is automatically elected and the county does not hold a general election for the seat. According to the 2010 census, the following counties have a population greater than 100,000:[5]
2012
Garrett was elected to the Whatcom County Superior Court on November 6, 2012. She advanced from the primary, winning 40.74 percent of the vote. She later won 52.25 percent of the vote, defeating opponent David M. Grant in the general election on November 6, 2012.[6][7]
