Debra Ramirez
Debra Ramirez is a judge for Division XXIV of the New Mexico 2nd Judicial District Court. She assumed office in 2015. Her current term ends on January 1, 2027.
Ramirez ran for re-election for the Division XXIV judge of the New Mexico 2nd Judicial District Court. She won in the retention election on November 3, 2020.
Ramirez was appointed by Governor Susana Martinez (R) on July 18, 2014, to replace Ross C. Sanchez.[1] Her term expired at the end of 2014, but Gov. Martinez appointed her to the court again in January 2015 to replace Judge Kenneth H. Martinez.[2]
Biography
Ramirez received her undergraduate degree from Bethany College and her J.D. from the University of Oklahoma College of Law. She previously worked as a domestic violence commissioner in the 2nd Judicial District.[1]

Ramirez was a 2016 Emerge New Mexico candidate. Emerge America is an organization that supports Democratic women running for office.[3]

2016
New Mexico held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election took place on June 7, 2016. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was March 8, 2016.[4] Incumbent Debra Ramirez ran unopposed in the New Mexico 2nd District Court general election for Division 24.[5]

The 84 judges of the New Mexico District Courts are selected in partisan elections to six-year terms. They must compete in yes-no retention elections if they wish to serve subsequent terms.[6]
The process of chief judge selection varies by district, as does the chief judge's term length.[6]
Qualifications
To serve on this court, a judge must:[6]
- be the minimum age of 35;
- have at least six years legal practice;
- be a state resident for at least three years; and
- be a district resident.
