December Harmon is a Human and Civil Rights Advocate known most for her work on the Citizens Police Review Board in Columbia, Missouri, where she currently resides
  • I want you to be able to live your best life. That means going to the doctor when you're sick.

  • I am the "Woke" agenda. I'm a Black Lesbian running to finally bring representation to those the party has abandoned.
  • It's true. I don't think the police should be allowed to execute Black people because they got a little bit scared. If that makes me a radical, so be it.
Public Safety is my passion, but that public safety has to include everyone. That means ending qualified immunity for law enforcement. That's my top issue. I support universal healthcare, women's autonomy, and addressing climate change on a corporate level, not an individual one. The short of it is, I don't like capitalism.
I always told my dad he was the biggest kid I knew. He served in the Air Force, Navy, and worked 2 jobs for the entirety of our lives together. He was a proud firefighter in Atlantic City and his advice was always get a job with a union. He supported my dreams, no matter how wild they were and when I failed, he always had confidence that I would rise to the next adventure. Dad always believed in me. Always could make me laugh. Always wanted to help others. I try to pass that on.
The Barbie movie hit me in my soul. President Barbie was my favorite because she said, "You're welcome!" just because she showed up. We don't do that enough. Book-wise, I would refer to Injustice: Gods Among Us. I think Superman had it right, if we have the power to do everlasting good in the world, then why don't we? I also am a big fan of George Orwell. Animal Farm and 1984 are what I see reflected in today's world.
What is this person FOR, not against. It's how I measure those I vote for and how I wish to be measured. It's easy to hate, but a person with vision and aspiration, one who can inspire is a much harder person to come by.
I like to do my research. I like to engage with people. I reserve judgement. I possess life experience across all social issues and I'm diverse enough I can be put into any group with ease. At the end of the day, I have values and principles and I fight for them.
My responsibilities are to communicate with my constituents. Receiving feedback meaningfully is a given, but conveying information back is just as important. People have a right to understand the choices before them and representatives often don't get the word out. This failure causes people to fill the void with their own conclusions.
To move America one step closer to egalitarianism. Universal healthcare. Universal College. Restructuring of policing.
The Berlin Wall fell. I remember being with my mother when the news broke. I was young and asked what was happening. My mom's best explanation was that they were being kept from seeing their family, but now they can. I would have probably been 4-years old.
McDonalds. I worked there for about 3 months before a near rape incident took place. I was groped by the cooks every shift and the manager regularly informed me that I should be more grateful for the opportunity. He said I was only hired for my looks to help male customers spend more and to make the cooks (who were male) work harder from my presence. The sexual violence was not his problem.
Keeping You a Secret by Julie Anne Peters. I read it in high school and it was a safe retreat into accepting my sexuality. After I read it, I shared it with my crush and it opened the door to start a romance.
Superman. He stands for Truth, Justice and the American Way.
Barbie World by Nicki Minaj ft. Ice Spice (Aqua)
Climate Change and poverty. We must avert from capitalist principles, otherwise America will collapse. People don't have food, shelter or travel. My generation feels hopeless and in despair towards the future. At the same time, if we don't address climate change, there won't be a planet later. These problems go hand in hand with common solutions.
I would support term limits. I would absolutely support an age cap.
The U.S. Senate are often called the "adults in the room." They have far less members than the house making the threshold for productivity between members more manageable. Confirming judges and investigating misconduct have never been more vital in America and the Senate is the most effective place I can be.
Yes, having a grasp that government is NOT like a business is difficult for some people to understand. Being in the mix of things, understanding government functions, engaging with voters who don't share all your views broadens perspective. It's key that a representative understand they are not there to rule, but to convey the wishes of others for a better society.
The silent filibuster must end. I believe you have to stand there, make your case or allow the vote. No hopping on a plane and going on vacation while the country sits and waits.
No. If I thought the past senators had done a great job, I wouldn't be running.
What did the five fingers say to the face? Montgomery Brawl.
Does this person have a history that reflects compassion when needed and a heavy hand when appropriate? Does this person intentionally promote social harm in their decision making or do they exercise critical thinking skills?
I'm liked because I'm approachable. I am a person of nuance and I would allow room to disagree with senators on one issue and still collaborate on others.
Yes. No two people agree on everything. The goal should be to make decisions that do the most amount of good for the most amount of people affected by said decision.
We need a functioning government. We need a transparent one. Investigative powers should come with purpose and follow through.
What do they understand the department's goals to be and what ideas they have for improvement, both within the department and for their service to the people? In other words, they must have vision.

Campaign website

Harmon’s campaign website stated the following:

Climate Change
December Harmon supports the Green New Deal.

"We have an obligation to Gen Z and all who come after, to leave them a planet. That includes doing everything we can to shift towards sustainability.

BUT we don't get there by individualism. We get there through collective change in the corporate industry. We have to shift from dirty oil and coal to clean renewable energy. We need serious discussion about fracking and the polluting of our waters.

We do this or we don't have a planet for the future."

- December L. Harmon

Women's Rights
December Harmon supports a woman's Right to Choose.

"Let's codify abortion access.

No one likes being used. When Roe v. Wade was overturned, after years and years of promises that it would never happen, what did the Democrats do? Their first act was to send fundraiser emails. Begging for money. Money for what?

They could have codified Roe v. Wade over the last 50 years, but chose not to because it wasn't profitable."

-December L. Harmon

Gun Control
December Harmon supports ALL gun control measures.

"If you're worried about not being able to buy a gun with new background checks, then you probably shouldn't be buying a gun. We have out of control gun violence and the response has been weaker gun laws every time.

The answer isn't to 'harden' schools. Let the children learn. Every month we witness either a school shooting or a shooting on a targeted community. Violence against the Asian community is up over 200%. Drag Story Hour has been the target of white nationalist around the country. Black people are murdered while praying and grocery shopping. When will enough be enough?

I care about lives more than I care about your guns."

-December L.

Police Reform
December Harmon wants to end Qualified Immunity for Law Enforcement Officers. Full Stop.

December believes in reallocating funds from law enforcement to social programs and civilian oversight entities.

December believes in creating an age requirement to serve in law enforcement.

"I believe that the police should not have the right to kill me or plant evidence on me. They call this 'hating the police.' They're not a people, they're an occupation. We have to stop treating those performing a job as higher than the law.

In America, we went from wanting to arrest offenders to wanting to arrest people for existing. Why do we arrest people for what they choose to put in their own body? Why do we arrest for what they choose to remove? Why do we arrest based on the color of one's skin? Why?

We should create an age requirement for those wanting to serve in law enforcement. We should ask that applicants be 25 years of age because if you can't rent a car, you shouldn't be allowed to indiscriminately kill people you find suspicious.

-December L. Harmon

Unions
December Harmon supports Unions.

"Dad was a firefighter and he loved being a member of his union. They were there for my family when he passed away.

Unions protect us in the work place. They make sure we are properly paid and that we have healthcare. They are the last line of defense in a capitalist society."

-December L. Harmon

Education

December Harmon supports Public Education, not Charter Schools or voucher systems.

She supports ending property tax funding of schools.

"I believe in five-day school weeks. I believe in paying teachers their worth and they're worth a lot! When I was a student, school was my second home and teachers were my second family.

I support teachers unions, free college and free school lunch. End lunch debt." -December L. Harmon

Healthcare

December Harmon supports Medicare for All and controlling for prescription prices.

"Six years the doctors told me that nothing was wrong. One doctor turned down a head scan because I was on Medicaid. He said, 'I don't think the tax payers should have to pay for you.'

One day I couldn't go on. THEN they ran the tests and diagnosed me with Arnold-Chiari Brain Malformation.

Then they went back to denying me medication and testing because of my poverty.

I'm a survivor, but of what?"

-December L. Harmon

LGBTQIA

December Harmon is an out and proud Lesbian Asexual.

"I believe the LGBT community should be able to get married, adopt children, play sports, use the restroom, read books at libraries and every other made up issue we've been forced to talk about.

Even though I grew up in a nuclear family, I know there's no such thing as 'traditional' family. We need to break away from imposing our lifestyles onto others."

-December L. Harmon

Voting Rights

December Harmon supports automatic voter registration. She also supports lowering the voting age to 16.

"Republicans have removed voters from the registry, constrained when and how you can vote, and heavily gerrymandered elections to make voting irrelevant in some districts.

A real democracy promotes civic engagement, not discourages it. If you can't win on the merits then you don't deserve to win."

-December L. Harmon

VETERANS

December Harmon supports legislation aiding Veterans Affairs.

"Patriotism runs in our bloodline.

My father served in both the Navy and the Air Force. One of my sisters shipped off to the Air Force for eight years and the other to the Army. I was speaking with a recruiter about my post-high school career, but that was the very same year my brain malformation presented itself and I had to find another way to serve."

-December L. Harmon

Religion

December Harmon believes in Separation of Church and State.

"I am a Christian. Religion teaches me how best to control myself. It is not for how best to control others. I am against Christian nationalism and invoking religion in matters of law."

- December L. Harmon

Prison

December Harmon supports ending For-Profit prisons and ending the Cash Bail system. She does not support the death penalty.

"If we lived in a world that always got it right, I'd feel differently. The fact of the matter is we have systemic racism and hyper-aggressive policing. More weight is put into getting someone rather than getting the right one.

We exacerbate the problem when we incentivize criminal justice towards injustice. For-Profit prisons only make money when they have prisoners. We also judge one's innocence against their coin purse.

Poverty should not be a measurement of guilt."

-December L. Harmon

Immigration

December Harmon supports the DREAM Act, meaningful Paths to Citizenship and fair treatment of those seeking Asylum.

"People are not illegal. The end. Crossing the border is not a criminal offense, it is a civil one. The disdain I've felt over the years listening to the dehumanizing rhetoric and seeing the separation of families weighs on me.

I believe we can do better."

-December L. Harmon

Homelessness

December Harmon believes we can do more.

"Homelessness is a multi-faceted problem that will always exist. True. That doesn't give us permission to ignore it or accept it. We have to address rent hikes, the purchase of homes for rental purposes, raising the federal minimum wage to $15, funding mental health services, and expanding public housing."

-December L. Harmon

Congress

December believes in Term Limits for both Congressional members and the Supreme Court. She also supports enforceable penalties for those who violate Ethical Standards. She believes politicians should be barred from Stock Trading.

"Congress has an approval rating of 19% for a reason. It is shameful for powerful politicians to hold onto power until they die. It prevents younger, more capable people from getting into office because they can't compete against the name recognition.

We also have a two-tiered justice system. Politicians are caught in a scandal or seditious act and nothing happens. There should be safeguards in place to keep the corruption out."

-December L. Harmon
