McClenahan provided the following statement to the Maricopa County Education Service Agency:
| “ | As the proud parent of two Tempe Union graduates and higher education Arizona scholars, my service to Tempe Union High School District is based on my desire to maintain and improve our place at the forefront of public education in this state. The quality of education we give our students is the foundation for their post-secondary education and employment readiness, and the basis for our community's and our nation's success in the future,
Tempe Union continues to face significant challenges based on state funding budgetary constraints, making the role of the Governing Board even more vital. We must carefully allocate all available funds toward the goal of keeping Tempe Union the finest district in Arizona. I bring unique and valuable skills to this endeavor as the candidate with expertise in both the business world and as an experienced board member. An honors graduate in Business Management from the University of Maryland, with a 30-year career in finance and facilities management, my experience counts. My tenure on the board -- which began during the Corona del Sol air quality crisis -- was marked by a solid record of accomplishments, including:
This year I served on the District's sex education committee, helping formulate the basis for an opt-in/opt-out program tailored to comply with Arizona state law providing an option for parents who want comprehensive sexual health curriculum for their students. While I respect completely that not all parents do, the desire for comprehensive sex education – including contraception, STD and parenting education -- has been made clear by our teens and parents, heard by the District, and should be available to students as parents decide. Continued strides in reducing teen pregnancy, parenthood and STDs should be a top priority. My leadership, management expertise, and passion for Tempe Union, including our students, teachers and community, will serve the Governing Board and Tempe Union well over the next four years and it will be my honor to continue to serve you.[2] |
