Deidre Tegarden was a 2016 Democratic candidate for District 11 of the Hawaii House of Representatives.

Campaign themes

2016

Tegarden's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Education:

  • Our keiki and teachers deserve schools with strong educational programs and the tools and opportunities they need to excel.
  • The still-not-built Kihei High School was delayed because of a failed understanding of the capital funding process. It is important for our representative in the State House to know that getting money appropriated by the legislature is not the same as getting it authorized.
  • South Maui deserves experienced representation to see that project through and a representative who understands the process.

Environment:

  • As your representative, I’ll create legislation that protects our environment. We need to focus on our stewardship of native forests and indigenous plants; restoration of watersheds; safeguarding our reefs; preserving and maintaining our water resources; and addressing agriculture and food security.
  • I’ll work with our congressional delegation on labeling laws and with private companies to improve their compliance with environmental regulations.

Economy:

  • Rather than government making it harder to start and operate a business, government should help and encourage business with sensible tax codes and incentives.
  • As one who has worked extensively in both the private and public sectors, including hospitality, education and government, I have the experience and vision to develop and support legislation that will enable South Maui to continue to grow and diversify its economy. We can attract the kinds of businesses that we want and need here.

Elderly:

  • I take representing our seniors very seriously and I promise you my door always will be open to them and their needs. A strong community recognizes and supports all populations. Creating a positive aging-society requires strong partnerships within a community and at all levels of government.

Equality:

  • Equality means different things to different people but when I speak of it I mean “equal access and equal treatment.” The legislator who represents South Maui must address the needs of all our people.
  • Everyone will have an equal voice in my office regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, age, economic status or religion.[1]
