Jurisdiction

This court holds the following jurisdiction:[1]

The Family Court has extensive jurisdiction over virtually all family and juvenile matters. All civil appeals, including those relating to juvenile delinquency, go directly to the Supreme Court while criminal cases are appealed to the Superior Court. The Constitution of Delaware, Article IV, Section 1, authorizes the Family Court.[2]

Judges of the Delaware Family Court are each appointed to 12-year terms by the governor.[3] To serve on this court, a judge must be a local resident, a state resident for five years, have a law degree and have practiced law in the state for five years.
