January 7, 2012

Delaware: Several same-sex couples tied the knot on January 1, 2012 in Delaware. Along with Hawaii, Delaware is now one of 14 states and the District of Columbia that has legalized same-sex unions.

The first couple wed were Lisa B. Goodman and Drewry N. Fennell. Senator Chris Coons delivered the sermon and Lt. Gov. Matthew Denn and Superior Court Judge Jan R. Jurden each read from the Bible during the service.[1]

The civil unions law took effect on Jan. 1, but no weddings were expected to take place that day because of the holiday. However, Clerk of the Peace for New Castle County, Kenneth Boulden, opened his office early in order to give interested couples the opportunity to marry as soon as possible. 32 civil union licenses had been issued by Sussex, Kent and New Castle counties within a few days.[2]
