Primary elections
Conventions are commonly used in Virginia. The Democratic Party and Republican Party form committees for different levels of government to decide on the method of nomination. The parties are required to let the Virginia Department of Elections know which offices will have alternate nomination methods. The window for notification opens at 125 days before the primary date and lasts until 105 days before the primary. (§ 24.2-516)
Parties can also choose to hold alternate nomination methods if no candidates make the primary ballot. (§ 24.2-526)
