Democrats won't challenge Laura Thielen candidacy in court

HONOLULU, Hawaii Hawaii's Democratic Party has chosen not to file a legal challenge to the candidacy of Laura Thielen for State Senate. Instead, the party will decide whether to reprimand, censure, or expel her.[1]

Thielen was a director of the state Department of Land and Natural Resources under former Republican Governor Linda Lingle. Thus, she is unable to run for office as a Democrat, because she has not been a member of the party in good standing for at least six month. Her request for an exception to this rule was denied.[1]

Thielen decided to file as a Democrat anyway for District 25 of the Hawaii State Senate, challenging incumbent Pohai Ryan in the primary.[1]

The party did not have the funds to spend on a court challenge and is now seeking to handle the matter internally, hoping it may influence voters before the primary.[1]
