Good Government:
Fair Process, Good Government
- For me it is all about the neighborhood voice getting heard in a fair process. Together we witnessed examples where things did not seem right. Without a fair and transparent process nothing else is safe or matters. It is fundamental to our local and state processes. Our property values, our schools and our community all depend on ensuring that the process is fair and that the people most impacted by any municipal or government decision are heard and their concerns about impacts or unintended consequences are treated with respect.
Environment:
Preserving Our Environment
- I consider environmentalism to be a core issue for my candidacy. As President of the Friends of Blue Hills and Friends of Hemenway Woods, I have been involved in many campaigns and issues in order to protect our precious natural resources. I have guided the Friends of Blue Hills to support the bottle bill, and have been involved in many clean up events and other projects.
- In terms of environmental grassroots advocacy, I was actively involved in stopping an overly dense development from being built in an ACEC (area of critical environmental concern). I knew this wetland area abutting the Fowl Meadow was of significant concern and that the proposed development would damage the ecosystem, with its planned clear-cutting and resurfacing of the area to accommodate 276 units in four and five-story buildings. Accordingly, I went out with my neighbors to examine the land, and learn about the specifics of this property’s ecology. Sure enough, we found a threatened blue spotted salamander one rainy April evening. The following year, a scientist went to this same area and found four more. I testified at hearings in support of legislation put forth by Representative Walter Timilty to protect the area by demonstrating the unique habitat and archaeological resources in this area.
Development: Smart development
- I want to improve 40B affordable housing legislation by adding language that would enforce the Commonwealth’s sustainable development principles.
- The principles include:
- Protect and restore environmentally sensitive lands, natural resources, agricultural lands, critical habitats, wetlands and water resources, and cultural and historic landscapes. Increase the quantity, quality and accessibility of open spaces and recreational opportunities.
- Support the revitalization of city and town centers and neighborhoods by promoting development that is compact, conserves land, protects historic resources, and integrates uses. Encourage remediation and reuse of existing sites, structures and infrastructure rather than new construction in undeveloped areas. Create pedestrian friendly districts and neighborhoods that mix commercial, civic, cultural, educational, and recreational activities with open spaces and homes.
Health & Safety
- Massachusetts current health care system is providing health insurance to nearly all of it’s residents. In Randolph it would be great to bring as many of these social services into the community as we can. For instance, it would be great to find more support for dental care in the schools. And for the seventy-five homeless, including children and families, and others struggling in Randolph it would ideal to provide local medical and social services support.
Education: Optimal Level Funding for Randolph and Milton Public Schools
- I am a product of the public school system in the town of Foxboro. I will advocate for the Milton and Randolph schools and recreational facilities to receive the optimal level of state funding.
- I would not support the creation of new corporate charter schools receiving state monies because I believe that any state money going toward education should go directly to students and not into the pockets of private investors.[1]
