Campaign themes

2016

Hartney's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

  • Education It is a shame that our teachers are not paid well for the job they do. I am bothered that the administration staffs have to be cut to the bone just to try to get by. In any business, costs to train people are high, but they are necessary. Our businesses need employees who have a basic education. Public education should be a priority in our budgeting process every single year. Even the Republican Governor in her state of the state address last year noted that we need to give teachers a raise. Our best and brightest are having to leave our state to reach their full potential, simply because we waste time and money on other budget items that are not as important. Education is one of the cornerstones of a state's future, and we simply need to do more.
  • New Businesses: We need to revitalize our state's revenue. Depending heavily on the taxes of oil and gas companies is not a sound strategy. Like any good investor, we need to diversify. We need to attract new and different businesses to Oklahoma, but we also can't afford to give everything away to them just to get them here. Technology is changing everyday, and we need newer businesses to consider moving operations to our state. We also need to recognize that we have to provide the correct infrastructure, or they will find a place that does. People won't start or move businesses to places that they don't want to live.
  • Taxes: I'm not in favor of raising taxes. I think our state has enough money to provide the services it needs to provide, we just need to change our priorities on how we spend your tax dollars. However, providing essential goverment services is NOT free, and each citizen has to help with the costs. We need state level employees to provide many safety and oversight functions. We need administrative and support personnel. Some times, when everything has been done to cut costs, there might not be enough tax dollars to solve every essential problem. If so, our representatives should be able to make us understand why any new tax is so important, and should not try to impose a tax that isn't a dependable source of income.
  • Healthcare: Whether you agree or disagree with the Affordable Care Act, it is the law of the land. Oklahoma's leaders have chosen to not accept the Federal money that has been offered. Yet, our last legislature suggested we balance the budget by cutting off Medicare to even more Oklahomans. I believe that if people don't have access to health insurance when something goes wrong, they will go to an Oklahoma hospital emergency room that they probably can't afford. Costs for everyone will rise. In addition, new businesses will not want to move here if our health care lags behind surrounding states.
  • Environment: No matter your stance on global warming, it is a fact that this planet has a finite number of natural resources. We cannot simply burn them up without eventually causing problems. We need to conserve our planet now, before the time is too late.[1]
