Campaign themes

2016

Miller's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Housing Now for Homeless in Hawaii:

  • Housing Now for 'houseless' people. Again, the plan exists, it is being implemented now in several cities, such as Salt Lake City, and this is what they said: “ Salt Lake City crunched the numbers. And the prescription was clear. The city was spending $20,000 per homeless resident per year—funding for policing, arrests, jail time, shelter and emergency services. Homelessness was not going down. Instead, for $7,800 a year through a new program called Housing First, the city could provide a person with an apartment and case management services.”
  • Rehabilitation programs for people with drug and food addictions are also necessary. Giving homeless people an apartment will not help them, if they are stuck in self destructive behavior.

Decrease the Cash-Economy:

  • Reduce the cash economy and help law-abiding businesses by hiring more auditors to verify employment status of industries with a commonly known propensity for cash payment of payroll.

Single Payer Health Care in Hawaii:

  • A simple explanation of Single Payer health care is this: You just pay a 3% pay roll tax on your pay check, and you now have similar or better health care coverage as if you were paying for a private insurance company.
  • Single Payer health insurance eliminates private health insurance. We pay the state, the state pays the health care provider.

Give our students A/C at price below another Moon Landing:

  • We can provide window-mounted A/C units in our schools at a fraction of the cost in the current bids.
  • The contractors all said that in addition to installing new A/C, they also needed to run more electrical lines.
  • Rather than adding new electrical boxes, why not install roof top Solar on all of our schools?
  • Installing roof top solar will save our BOE money, solve the problem, and help to make Hawaii more self reliant.
  • Installing window mounted A/C units powered by roof top solar is the quickest and most economical way to proceed.[1]
