Dennis Murphy was the interim commissioner of labor in Connecticut. Murphy, the deputy commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Labor, was appointed to his position by Governor Dan Malloy (D) on December 31, 2015, for a term beginning January 1, 2016. Murphy replaced Sharon Palmer, who retired at the end of 2015. Malloy announced Palmer's permanent successor, Scott Jackson on January 25, 2016.[1][2]

Murphy had previously served as acting commissioner from July 2012 to October of that year, following the resignation of Glenn Marshall.[3] Malloy appointed Palmer on August 29, 2012, and she officially took office on October 5, 2012.[4]

Murphy joined the Connecticut Department of Labor in January 2011. Previously, he had been a neutral labor arbitrator with the American Arbitration Association, the director of human resources for the City of Stamford, Conn., and the director of labor relations and chief administrative officer for the City of Bridgeport, Conn. As of 2016, he had worked in labor employment for more than 30 years. Murphy has represented both unions and management at organizations such as the National Association of Government Employees and the International Brotherhood of Police Officers.[1]

Education

Murphy received his undergraduate degree from Fairfield University and his J.D. from the Boston University School of Law.[1]

Political career

Acting commissioner of labor (January-February 2016)

Gov. Dan Malloy appointed Deputy Commissioner Murphy as acting commissioner for the second time at the end of 2015; he took office on January 1, 2016. Murphy replaced Sharon Palmer, who had announced her retirement in the fall of 2015.[1]

Murphy resumed his previous position as deputy labor commissioner following his position as interim commissioner until February 15, 2016, when Kurt Westby took over as deputy.[2]

Acting commissioner of labor (July-October 2012)

Gov. Dan Malloy appointed Deputy Commissioner Murphy to serve as interim labor commissioner on July 3, 2012, to fill the vacancy left by former officeholder Glenn Marshall's resignation from office. Murphy served until October 2012.

Murphy resumed his previous position as deputy labor commissioner following his position as interim commissioner.[4]

2012

Murphy was appointed acting Connecticut Commissioner of Labor by Governor Dan Malloy (D) in July 2012. As with his 2015 appointment, Murphy was serving as deputy commissioner when his predecessor left office; after Commissioner Glenn Marshall's resignation, he was tapped to replace Marshall in an interim capacity while they searched for a permanent successor. Sharon Palmer was ultimately appointed to officially take over the office, effective October 5, 2013, and Murphy was reinstated as deputy commissioner.[4]
