Murphy issued the following statement regarding his bid for office:

I consider myself a pragmatic liberal. As a quality engineer, I plan to bring solid experience with root cause analysis and problem solving to the job of legislation to work to:
  • protect the social safety net (Social Security, unemployment when necessary, and health insurance for citizens),
  • improve middle class wages and opportunities,
  • increase opportunities for young people
  • protect our veterans and their care
  • protect our environment
