Candidate Connection

Denny Longwell participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on September 23, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Denny Longwell's responses follow below.[4]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1. Education

2. Jobs
3. Healthcare
[5][6]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

pay inequity, civil & human rights, criminal justice, drugs, climateCite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[6]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Denny Longwell answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?

Paul Wellstone.

Because he, in my opinion, answered to, and stood up for, the citizens. He wasn't bought off by any person or corporation. West Virginians need that type of voice and that is the standard I'm working toward.[6]

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else that best describes your political philosophy?
No. I'm a common man. I worked as a blue collar person. I know the struggles of everyday living. That book hasn't been written yet.[6]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Respect for others, honesty, dedication, compassion,[6]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
I am a great listener. I am genuinely honest. Some people say I'm honest to a fault; meaning I hurt myself sometimes by being honest. I am a tireless worker. This won't be a joyride. It will be work to represent the people as they deserve to be represented.[6]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Representing all the citizens in your area of responsibility; not just catering to one Party.[6]
What legacy would you like to leave?
That I was a success. My definition of success is that things are better after you've left than they were when you arrived[6]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at that time?
JFK's assignation. I was one day shy of 17.[6]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
Delivering newspapers. Six years.[6]
What happened on your most awkward date?
The girl wanted me to kiss her and I was too shy. I've always regretted that.[6]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Independence Day, Veteran's Day and Workers' Memorial Day. Because it is America's Day, a day to remember our Vets and a day to memorialize our workers who have either been killed at work or who have died due to disease from workplace exposure.[6]
What is your favorite book? Why?
Probably The Grapes of Wrath. I can't really put a finger on why.[6]
(For non-Nebraska candidates) What do you consider the most important differences between the legislative chambers in your state?
Both Chambers should be working together in the best interest of the State.[6]
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
No. The guy I'm running against claims he's running on his record. I guess that's good because his record is nothing to brag about if you are a normal citizen. If him having a record proves beneficial it is only in the manner that it enlightens our citizens that he needs replaced.[6]
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
Education, jobs, healthcare, housing, safe drinking water, drug abuse[6]
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
Respect[6]
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Yes. I realized along time ago that you have to build a relationship if you expect to progress.[6]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
There are no current good processes. It is all a biased event based on which Party is in power.[6]
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Education, Veterans, Labor,[6]
If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the legislature, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
Yes. In a position where I can be the most effective for our State and our citizens.[6]
Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
Dave Pethtel[6]
Are you interested in running for a different political office in the future?
Not at the present time.[6]
