Candidate Connection

Derek McIntyre completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by McIntyre's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Top 3 Priorities 1. Finding a long term solution to fully funding PEIA. 2. Concentration on common sense infrastructure management. 3. Finding solutions for our current opioid epidemic.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Labor and Education. A strong, educated and trained workforce will help with economic opportunities and lead to a strong middle class. If we continue to push legislation that works against us, we will continue to sit at the bottom of all national statistics. This is not acceptable.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

A representative that will listen to the voice of those who elected them. Not a national agenda.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

Because I believe in people, and my proven leadership abilities haven shown, I can get things done.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

Listening, and responding to the people.

What happened on your most awkward date?

Whew. What happened on my most awkward date? That's a good question. Nothing really stands out that I can remember. But I like that question.

What is your favorite holiday? Why?

My favorite holiday is Christmas. Love spending time with my extended family, and I love the Christmas "magic", and how kids get so excited.

If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?

Hummm.. How about Probably Iron Man. Tony Hawk has some really advanced equipment, and he is obviously really smart. I'll stick with Iron Man.

What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?

My favorite thing in my home would be my back porch! Sitting, thinking, watching and talking are the most enjoyable things to do!

What was the last song that got stuck in your head?

Greta Van Fleet - Highway Tune

Every state besides Nebraska has two legislative chambers. What do you consider the most important differences between the legislative chambers in your state?

In West Virginia, currently, the biggest difference between chambers, is the influence of out of state interest.

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?

Yes and No. Experience allows for good flow. And an understanding of how to be efficient. However, it also allows for a comfortable and stagnant government. You need a mixture of both to be as productive as possible for the people you represent.

Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.

Sure. Teamwork always overcomes obstacles. Difference of opinion can lead to great opportunities as long as you are truly listening, and understanding each other.
