2015
The city of Henderson, Nevada, was initially scheduled to hold elections for city council on June 2, 2015. A primary took place on April 7, 2015. Because one candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote in the primary election, the general election was called off. The filing deadline for candidates who wished to run in this election was February 5, 2015. Three of the four city council seats were up for election.[1]
In the primary election for Ward 4, incumbent Sam Bateman defeated Derek Uehara and Tristan Galicia.[2][3]

Derek Uehara participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on May 16, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Derek Uehara's responses follow below.[4]
What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
“ | 1) Prudent & responsible management of State assets; 2) Dramatically increase awareness of and participation in claiming property from Unclaimed Property. 3) Dramatically increase awareness of and participation in State Education accounts (NV ESA, NV 529, and NV Prepaid Tuition).[5][6] | ” |
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?
“ | I am most passionate about dramatically increasing the awareness of and participation in our education plans. One of the key roles of Nevada's State Treasurer is to manage the education accounts of the state; this includes the NV Education Savings Account, the NV 529 Plan, and the NV Prepaid Tuition plan. Only a small portion of our population is aware of and participating in these plans; for example, less than 4% of our students are participating in the NV 529 plan. Nevada ranks 50th Nationwide in education and we have a tremendous opportunity to positively address this issue. If elected, I will work with all Nevada residents to determine how best to reach as many families as possible in sharing this information.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[6]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Derek Uehara answered the following:
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
“ | I understand the unique opportunity that the State Treasurer has to make an impact by brightening the future of our young people; by improving the quality of life in our communities; and by enhancing the long-term economic health of our state. Taking advantage of this opportunity will require significant interaction with residents throughout the state and the relevant personal qualities. I have the temperament, the passion, and the energy to execute and seize this opportunity.[6] | ” |
“ | 1) Prudent & responsible management of State assets; 2) Effective management of Unclaimed Property; and 3) Effective management of State Education accounts (NV ESA, NV 529, and NV Prepaid Tuition).[6] | ” |
