Bergstrom completed a survey conducted by The Sun Current:

Q. Why are you seeking election to the Bloomington Board of Education?

I am currently seeking re-election to the school board. I have been on the board for one term, and I am hoping to earn enough votes to stay for one last term. In my short time on the board, I have had the honor of serving as its clerk for one year and as its chair for one year. I understand and believe in the importance of teamwork and collaboration. As the African proverb states, “If you wish to go fast, go alone. If you wish to go far, go together.” I am hoping that our community would like to go far.

Q. Are you satisfied with the board’s budget decisions for the 2015-16 school year?

Our board along with district staff put considerable time and effort into our Guiding Change Document (you can find this document online). In this document you will find the center column contains a list of unacceptable outcomes. They are as follows: We will not violate the law, increase safety risks, close schools, sell district property, consolidate two high schools into one, put in jeopardy any targeted state or federal funding for mandated programs (such as special education and integration). I am satisfied with the work that has been done on this document and stand by the board’s decision to adopt it.

Q. What could the district do to better meet the needs of its students?

Change happens as a result of constructive and collaborative conversation between (in this case) district staff, board members and our community. I feel we have a strong district led by competent caring staff who have the best interest of all our students in mind. That said, there is always room for improvement and I welcome any and all suggestions from the public.[2]
